re: Just to put perspective on coach Miles.....

Great thread OP, more effort than I have time for. But this is exactly what I have been trying to make the people I talk to who hate Miles understand.

Regardless of whatever your opinion is of him, his LSU program has been competing at a high level since he took over. Even a bad (by comparison) 2008 season didn't stop him from going out and picking up that 2009 recruting class, which turned out to be one of the best.

There just are not very many coaches out there at any level, who could come in to LSU right now and maintain the program at its current level for as long as he has. He competes against the best in the SEC on an annual basis, and had LSU in the title hunt year in and year out. And for the last several years, when we don't win the SEC it has been because someone from our own division has gone on to win not only the SEC championship, but the national championship as well...

That doesn't mean I like moral victories... but it does mean I am proud of our Tigers, and it does mean I recognize the extreme difficulty of accomplishing what Miles does consistently every year.

With all of the money out there that big time programs spend to pull in the best coach out there, it should tell you something that Miles tenure here at LSU ranks right up there with some of the all-time greats.

You realize we evenly compete with Saban's bama team every year, right? Not to mention that this year we are down roughly 15-20 key players and still nearly beat them. I'm not making excuses at all. I'm just pointing out that this "we can never compete with bama" argument is completely ridiculous.

Head to head LSU matches up good with Bama. The difference is Bama beats everyone else while LSU doesn't. The lone exception being 2011. But 2 losses isn't a bad record with this team. But it does get frustrating to watch Bama playing for a third NC.

As much as Miles' play calling blows my mind at times, he is apparently a great motivator. Judging from the past few years, he's a competent recruiter as well. Does he need to have the very BEST recruiting class to go undefeated?? IMO no. A lot of things have to align for that to happen.

I would rather have one loss during the regular season, learn from that one loss, and go on to win a NC than go undefeated during the regular season and get butt pumelled in the NCG.

IMO record matters less than the end result/bowl game we play

I whole heartedly disagree. You do not have the sucess that LSU's program has had under Miles with him only being a "good" coach. There are numerous factors that Miles is far superior than other college coaches at, and there are aspects where he is medicore compared to other college coaches. Roll all of those things together, and you have an LSU program competeing at a high level every season. The injury plague that hit us this year happens... its the way things go. To win a National Championship, a whole lot of things have to go your way throughout the course of a season. A bad bounce of the ball or an injury is all that it takes to derail anyones season, regardless of who the coach is.

And even with the injury situation this season, Miles has kept his team in the running. We have played more freshman this year than anyone else in the SEC. And yet here we are still. That is greatness.

I get what you are saying, and I kind of agree generally speaking. But we are talking about a program who is in the same division as Bama who has won 2 of the last three, and Auburn who won it in 2010. To me, that is why Miles record here at LSU matters a whole hell of alot more than say if he was still at OK State, or if we were talking about any other conference.

You say this like we didn't win the SEC last year.

Oh, and every one of those coaches has lost a game by 21 in their career before, including Lord SAban. Remember getting skullfricked by UGA?

Do you realize how rare 11 win seasons are? And Miles is well on his way to having 6 of them in 9 years if the team doesn't give up on this year. Hell, 11 wins seasons are incredibly rare, let alone undefeated seasons. Here's a hint: Saban has only had ONE undefeated season. ONE.

Bama also doesn't play UF every year and constantly gets fricking Tennessee every year from the east while we get fricking UGA and South Carolina.

Of course it is, but to want a new coach because Bama wins a 3rd title turns us into Auburn----a fanbase with a little brother/inferiority complex.
WE are bama's equal. Why do you think they celebrated so hard when they won Saturday? It's because they knew we were the only team in the country who can match up with them in talent.

Nope. He got destroyed on 1/9. 13-1 is a great record. If Miles was EVER going to coach this team to an undefeated season, last year was it...IMO. Now that Saban has Bama rolling and we are in the west...we would have to get by him in order to win the SEC. Saban has dramatically ended his teams' problem with complacency after winning a MNC. They will be this good from here on out until he retires. With Florida rising, Georgia and USCe great...Miles will need to have No.1 recruiting classes every year and develop and coach players better in order to give LSU a chance at an undefeated season.

This is utterly stupid, obviously we don't need a number 1 recruiting class to win...just look at the young players we have playing this season. We are constantly at the top of recruiting and to think that a team will win every game every season is ludicrous. The parity of college football plus the youth of these players there is always a chance of an upset or let down. We have been a constant winner, not only a winner but constantly in the top 10 so this program is in great hands. As far as 1/9 goes, it's over, time to move on.

Spurrier-----1 NC and NO undefeated regular seasons, bitch please.

Saban-----Okay, that's ONE

Petersen/Patterson------Do it at a real program.

Stoops------ROFL copter

Brian Kelly---BWAHAHAHA

Chip Kelly----ZERO undefeated regular seasons and NO NCs. Also 0-1 vs. Les. ROFL

Jimbo------lolololololool

MAck Brown-----???????

Lane Kiffin------3 losses with THAT team?

Muschamp------

Bowden's record is even more impressive when you factor in that his team was the only FL team to play the other 2 EVERY YEAR.

He was playing FSU at their peak, Miami at their peak, and a couple of solid teams in the ACC like Clemson, Nc State (phillip Rivers), and Georgia tech.

Not to mention they always seem to have had an additional great OOC game with ND or somebody just as good.
