I have seen many old timers talking highly of the game between LSU and the USC(loaded with future All-Pro stars).
Do you sense a similar vibe going into this Game as that one.

NO. That LSU team was not near as good as this one. AND IMO this Bama team is not near as good as the 79 USC team.BEFORE THIS game LSU has a shot. Not many people thought the 79 LSU team had a chance.

I was at that game with my Dad, and all I remember was after the game everyone was yelling LSU LSU as they walked outside the stadium.

There are very few stadiums,i will go even one step further and say places that have the mystique that Tiger Stadium has,Especially at Night.
I hope we win this game, that will just add to the Legend of the Death Valley!!

It was the mighty USC against the southern hicks. The no. 1 running back in the nation against a top 10 lSU defense. Charles White was avg. Well over 100 yds. a game and we shut him down. They had all american wide receivers. I was standing shoulder to shoulder wth my friend and had to scream in his ear for him to hear. If not for a phantom call in the endzone against us we win. All i could hear was kill the refs. I was hoarse for 3 days. I've seen about 75 games in TIGER stadium and that was by for the best memory!!!

You can find tickets for this game, USC game , no tickets and thousands of peeps outside trying to buy them. The atmosphere for this is pretty similar, will be crazy if we get up early.

LSU won a lot of games at LSU because of the home field advantage with lesser athletic teams than the visitors. You could almost give LSU 7-10pts just because of this. Now maybe 3-5pts. Not the same. People that had tickets back then appreciated it a hell of a lot more than now. Back then it was a privilege, not its more of who you are and who is seen. There's a name for it but I can't bring it up right now.

Same vibe? Hard to say. The problem with these "old timer" questions is that I was so drunk game day back then I don't know how I felt. Now that I've been sober for 25yrs. it's like you're asking me to access another personality.

One thing I do remember is that Tiger Stadium on a Saturday night was a huge advantage for us against any ranked team. Whole lotta magic!

Not even close. This one is all made up by ESPN, CBS and gumps.

In the USC game it was David vs Goliath and believe me people were different in Baton Rouge in that decade. They cared. Tailgaiting was very secondary to getting inside the stadium and the players were worshiped. Today with the blaring commercials I feel more like I'm at an NBA circus.

I was also at that game with my mom. LSU was not nearly as talented. The program was good but not dominant and the team came across is fighters who gave their all but were not great athletes. We were trying to climb the mountain at that time but now we have arrived and continue to be a force. It may sound crazy but I expect us to win Saturday but back then I just wanted us to stay close. The common thread is respect from both games.

I was a freshman at LSU in that year, i.e. fall of 1979 and had a speech class with former QB at Broadmoor High School Dale Begue. He was playing defensive back at LSU at the time though not starting his freshman year. I remember him talking in class that USC was about the best team he had ever seen on film and that included the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburg Steelers who were the premiere NFL football teams at the time. Didnt sit in the Student Section that night as I sat in my Dad's season ticketes. Without a doubt one of the loudest games I have ever attended. I remember walking up the ramps on the West side to go to Section 12 , Row J , Seates 29 and 30 and could absolutely hear the stadium buzzing with loudness as I was walking towards the seats. I would imagine this game is beginning to have the same feelings as that game for this Ole Timer.

I agree with an earlier poster fans then were better now we have social fans they buy the tickets to be hip!

I listened on the radio I was a freshman at an LSU system school it was so loud you could not hear the radio announcers .

That would not happen today to many social fans, they sit and chat with freinds and socialize. Some have gotten offended when I yell for the tigers !!!

As an "old timer" that was part of the LSU student section for the '79 game, I'm qualified to rant.

Similarities: #1 team coming in, night game, most "experts" picking LSU to lose, loud stadium expected

Differences: Minimal talent gap between the teams, far more pre-game media exposure, more relevant to national CFB picture, 15K more butts in seats, prime-time national broadcast

Can't read the vibe from 500 miles away, but I would expect there to be a lot of buzz in anticipation of the game.

If the noise is = or > than USCe a few weeks back, & it should be, McCarron can forget about any cute check offs at the line.

I'd agree, going to the game there was no build up of great intensity, it developed during the game as the Tigers played way beyond expectations.

Times are different, the relationship between LSU and Bama is different the build up since Saban arrived at Alabama is different, the SEC championship was not on the line and the championship didn't even mean that much since scheduling was peculiar back then and there was no BCS.

The one thing that sticks out about '79 USC is the constant "Tiger Bait" chant that rocked the stadium from the time USC came out for warmups till the end of the game. No booing, just a continuous roar of "Tiger Bait, Tiger Bait, Tiger Bait . . .". It was tremendous !

I was there, and as I have commented on many times, and it never gets old to me. Seen many many games in Tiger Stadium, nothing compares. Was on the side line with my then 7 year old when Nick came back for the first time and it was very loud as I expect this game will be, but not the same roar that seemed to get louder and louder. People stood the whole game, there was no let up. I remember looking out on the field and it was quite obvious how much bigger the USC team was, but becuz of the fans, and the constant roar that filled the stadium that night, LSU almost pulled off the impossible. I remember the hundreds of LSU fans who lined up around the USC bus, and started rocking the bus, yelling Tiger Bait, Tiger Bait as each USC player and coach stepped off the bus. Damn, I'm getting goose bumps again.

Present that night. LSU had great defenses and no one gave them a chance. Back in the day the cheer was Tiger Bait and none of the sophomoric BS we see nowadays. You could literally hear the crashing of helmets from the field. The proud people of Louisiana worked those games like a mule on a plow line. The air was electric, wafting with bourbon, and everybody worked up. For the people of LA it was Saturday night. My how things are so different.

This is the one thing I miss most from the "old days"- the entire stadium SCREAMED all the cheers in unison, not just random noise. "Go...Go...Go Big Tigers Go", and "Poosh 'em back, Poosh 'em back, Wa-a-a-y back!", etc. You could hear the collective coonass accent clearly, it was a beautiful thing...

I can remember the media making the USC team the greatest of all time. They were crushing people and were loaded with talent. The LSU team was good with a solid defense. Back then LSU was all about having great defenses with a conservative offense (3 yards and a cloud of dust). I remember thinking LSU was going to show the media gods what hard nosed football was all about. The excitement started building during the week leading up to the game. By the time the game got there, people were ready to strapped it on. The Tigers fought with a true passion and the fans had the stadium rocking. I listen on the radio and got goose bumps listening to the game. I was so proud of the team and the fans for showing them what LSU/ SEC/southern football was all about. If not for the refs LSU would have pulled the upset. Pisses me off to this day. Their linemen tackling our defensive linemen with no calls of holding. GRRRRRRRRRR.
