At 2:30 AM, were running without navigation equip from NO to Biloxi and hit a concrete reef

The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources says four injured boaters from Louisiana were rescued after their boat wrecked on a concrete reef southeast of Bay St. Louis.

Spokeswoman Lauren Thompson tells WLOX-TV that two were seriously injured and the others had minor injuries. All four are from Baton Rouge.

She says the men were heading from New Orleans to Biloxi when their 30-foot boat hit Taylor Key Reef about 2 a.m. Saturday. She says they did not have any navigation equipment, and shot off flares to help rescuers find them.

Thompson says Marine Patrol and Coast Guard crews arrived about 2:25 a.m. Saturday and reportedly found the men sitting on the reef, wearing life jackets.

She says the seriously injured men were taken to Memorial Hospital in Gulfport.

I remember the first time I drove a boat at night without navigation

What are we in the 1800s going off of moonlight and star navigation

Wow, bunch of retards to run at night without electronics. I fish that reef when it looks like it may storm and I don't want to go all the way to Biloxi marsh

Dude, many years I had ran without any electronics without any problems. 30 years ago, the most the avg fisherman only had sounders for offshore running. I didn't get my first GPS till 1995. Trick was to read your charts and know were you were going along with reading rig numbers to know what block you were in and were you know were you were at. I bet more then 50% of people that run offshore today don't know how to use a compass and charts along with drift/tide movement. It's a lost art. I had fished with some people that were season vets out there that didn't even have charts on board. In fact, one trip that I was fishing with someone else, his GPS/plotter went down and he was like WTF? Good thing I was there. I always carryed some charts in my tackle bags.

The problem with these guys was that they didn't know the waters or had good charts or didn't take the time to plan there trip. Also I'm sure they had to be hauling arse which one doesn't do at night.

I just hope they are ok.

couldn't disagree with you there. seems like most people spend the extra $1000 or how ever much and double up on there nav systems if the boat is big enough which still isn't an excuse to know how to navigate without the gps. i've been on a lot of offshore trips and never have i once seen a chart pulled out.

I seriously doubt a GPS would have kept them from hitting a concrete reef.

for a 30' boat you would think they have electronic charts that show rigs and submerged obstructions. not talking about a handheld, but in any case my point wasn't in response to the OP

shoot, I was with my bro-in-law once, and all his electronics went down on his 38" Gravois, after fishing floaters out of Cocodrie. We wandered around in the dark, no moon, until I rmembered my hand held Garmin Map76S in my backpack, which took us right in. Scary close calls with some obstructions too.

when my buddy first got his shearwater it didnt have a compass, everything was electronic. We were fishing out of Grand Isle the northern part of Barataria bay. We had to run from a couple water spouts and storms throughout the day. When we were finally ready to head back in the gps wouldnt work and we had no compass.

We got all turned around and ended up in Port Sulphur, had to get an old man to lead us back out in the right direction. Needless to say the boat now has a compass. Oh and all that was wrong with the GPS is I accidentally unplugged it by shoving a towel behind it

A GPS/plotter/sounder would of let them know the reef was there if the card is up to date.

Once a person learns an area, no need pulling them out. But now, the way they are ripping the rigs out the gulf, it's best to have those charts. Also, I been to a few places that rigs were once there deep dropping and did great. Nice to have those numbers. And yes, I have some charts that go back 30 years.

I have a boat similar is size to that one, and when I run at night it looks like this. I don't know how people go out at night and run at speed without the proper equipment. In the big scheme of things on a 30 foot boat the additional expense is negligible to do it right.

I guess because I know the area I understand how dangerous it is to run at night without electronics. There are literally so many things that could be hit. Just off the top of my head there are many ship channel pilings, that concrete reef, flatboat key, many barrier islands, half sunk shrimp boats, etc. all in the area they hit

And as gaston said, they were a little far inshore if trying to get to Biloxi
