I posted this on the OT and forgot about this board. But I want to get a handgun for home protection. I was looking at a smith and wesson .38 bodyguard revolver with a sight.

It's really small and I was wondering what do u all have. It wud be used for me shooting around w the boys and for gf on days when I am not home for her protection as well. Thanks in advance guys.

Since this would be for the GF's use as well, then I'd say a .38 is a pretty good choice.

.38 is all that police used for many years. Now .38 isn't good enough for us macho frickers on this board, but in all seriousness, the ammo is affordable enough to go plinking with it to develop skills, yet strong enough to put some hurt on someone.

If you're set on a .38, take a look at the Ruger LCR. It's lighter than the Bodyguard, has a better grip, an has one of the best DAO triggers out there.

Since he's wanting it for home defense (not concealed carry), I'd think a heavier pistol would be better for less perceived recoil.

I wouldn't want the GF to develop a fear from the snappier recoil of a lighter weight weapon. Just my opinion.

I would agree with this.

Also, take a look at the S&W Air Weight. A true point and shoot gun. You can find a 642 with rubber grips and a laser for under $500.

This is where the better grips come in. The Hogue Tamer grips on the LCR really reduce the recoil of the weapon. A lighter LCR still has less perceived recoil than a J Frame or Bodyguard.

I have the 442 and I love it as a pocket gun. Sportsman's Outdoors has them for $340-345. LINK
