Mett and reading defenses...many of you have mentioned that he has

not shown an ability to do so. Can someone please explain what "reading a defense" entails?

Changing play at the line picking up pre snap stuff, blitzes, stunts, etc.

Dude, I'm a girl. Not sure what a QB needs to do when reading a blitz or checking off corners. Just need a little more indepth explanation. Obviously a blitz they must dump the ball off quick (I'm assuming) but is that what ya'll mean?

He certainly has an inability to read a corner blitz, especially from his blind side. It's obvious the game hasn't 'slowed down' for him yet.

Yea, I can understand that. So the best thing for him to do in that situation is to step up in the pocket, right? Which gives him a few more seconds to throw? If he catches a blitz pre-snap then what is he supposed to do?

If the CB is blitzing and he picks it, he needs to hot route(priority throw) to that received where the hole will come from the blitzing corner.
If a linebacker is blitzing, direct someone to pick up the block.
As far as coverages, find out what receivers are going to have favorable match ups and exploit them. Do they have a linebacker on a WR....shite like that.

Dude didn't even gave to read a defense. We are not asking him to be a 'running' QB.
We are just asking him to make a play.
I just saw Drew Brees take two to three steps up in the pocket and make a play; is Zack watching this?
I get it. In a perfect world, under perfect protection, he is easy money. Just try to make a play. Give the defense different looks.

So this means that the receiver &/or running back needs to have a heads up too so he can be ready to catch...?

Caligirl-- I haven't played since the 70's,but, here goes. Example- the QB can change the play by his audible at the line. When you see him rise up away from the center and yell at the other players, that's when he's changing the play. Example- if he sees 4 defenders on his left and 3 on the right-he changes the running play to the right where there's only 3 to block. If he sees the linebackers or safties close to the defensive linemen,they're going to blitz into the backfield-so, he could call for a short pass in the middle where the defense is not there. If they all crowd the line 8 or 9 in the box,close to the line-he could change from a running play to a run around end or a short pass out to the flat to a tailback or flanker and not run up the middle into 8 or 9 players. If the QB sees defensive backs playing way back ,then pass right behind the line where no players are. You change the play to where the least amount of defensive players are to give you an advantage. There's terms and language to learn that all the offense knows when giving the signals. If you can hear the QB say Kill Kill, he's killing the play called in the huddle and changing it with their terms and phrases.

When a QB lines everyone up for a play the defense takes their positions or "coverages." Based on the down and distance the defense will run various defensive alignments which are combinations of man to man and zones.
The QB looks the defense for number of "men in the box" which is players close to the line for run defense. He also looks for flaws or weaknesses in coverage on the receivers. Based on this he may change the play at the line of scrimmage to something better.
Defensive geniuses like Saban and Chavis make their living disguising these defensive alignments confusing the QB.

You may have also noticed the QB (even Mett) hand signalling behind his rear. That is to alter the running gap left or right or to signal the most likely defender that the blocking back will have to take on. Mett makes these kind of signals all the time but doesn't hot read the plays outside or into any particular gap. If they have practiced it enough, for some reads, signals or audibles should not even be required. The receivers, backs and the QB have the vantage point to see the entire defense, and they should be on the same page with what they see.
This is a mix of coaching and player execution, and it isn't really possible for us on the outside to figure out where the breakdown is.
