With the proclamation of bhtigerfan that my 270 will in fact not kill an elk, but rather bounce off its hide, I have been looking at some guns on gunbroker.com.

question 1: can good deals be had on there, or will the auctions eventually get bid up to about what you would pay at a local store when you account for shipping and FFL fees?

Question 2: Do prices tend to jump dramatically at the end similar to how eBay does?

Actually looking at shotguns, not rifles, just thought I would throw a joke in there.

It can, but I avoid the auctions and just look for good "buy it now" deals. There are so many guns on there, that they have to shoot you straight and offer a great price or someone else will. Assuming you aren't looking for a one of 1875 shotgun...

I bought a few guns from there which were good deals. Took a lot of shopping for it. Some get bid up at the end but some don't. It depends on the gun and the time of year. As we have gotten closer to hunting season it seems that more people are bidding. During the summer I picked up a brand new SBE for 1K but lately they have been going for 1500 used.

A 270 will kill an Elk...It just depends on what kind of cartridge you are using. I went moose hunting in Canada a few years ago and I asked my brother if my 270 encore was good enough to drop one. He said sure but he would have to tweak some loads for me. Well I didn't want to go that route so he said to go with a 338. The 338 definitely did the trick but but the recoil on the encore was a mofo.

You can definitely find good deals on the site. I have found that as long as you do not get attached to a single item you can have better success. Keep scanning for what you want. Some people are dumbass' and lable their stuff wrong. Search for what you want by using only partial descriptions and you may find an auction that nobody is watching because the lable is lacking certain key words.

It's also important to look at the seller's feedback score (just like eBay).

I think it's also worth it to use a credit card, if the seller will accept that form of payment. Most sellers add ~ 3% (a few don't), but it gives you an extra avenue if the item you buy turns out to be "not as described."
