Who pays for Air Force One expenses during a campaign visit?

Do not turn this into an Obama bashing thread. Every President since the beginning of AF1 has used the plane for campaign stops.

Just curious. I know it costs a shite ton of money to fly it around. Just wondering if that cost has to come out of the President's general campaign fund or if it is taxpayer paid for.

He makes one "official visit" to something during the trip, and the taxpayers float the whole bill.

It's nothing unique to Obama, but he may be taking it to a different level (I don't know for sure, if you compare past presidents, as this is not a reason I'm choosing not to vote for him, so I'm not going to look into it that much).

It's part of the perk of being the incumbent.

That's pretty much the long and short of it. The DNC/campaign picks up certain stops that are purely political, but we're on the hook for the president's travel and safety no matter what the frick he's doing.

My last commander (AFRICOM) is in hot water for blurring the lines of official and personal travel too much. The president has a ton of lawyers and ombudsmen around at all times to tell him how to keep this things legal (strickly speaking).

Yeah: No president ever used Air Force 1 during a re-election campaign until Obama.

Do you want him to fly coach? C'mon man.

well we are picking up the tab for mitt and ann's safety too. Although that probably does cost less.

re: Who pays for Air Force One expenses during a campaign visit?

The gov't pays for it, not the campaign. I know for a fact that someone tried to make Ronald Reagan pay $25,000.00 per plane trip back to California, but they stopped it. The gov't pays. I really think it's wrong for taxpayers to pay the $25,000.00 cost for AirForce1 to fly for a campaign trip. The Campaign should pay for it. That needs to be changed next term, next year. Obama has used it too much, more than anyone in history. 150 fundraisers, it's wrong. To an official meeting, conference, function of gov't, yes, of course, gov't should pay. Not a campaign only trip. Remember when Reagan was attacked for flying back to California too much[once a week], then they found out Nixon and Kennedy did too.
