GW2 PvP: Hints and Tips

To be clear I started this thread to get some hints and tips not so much to give them. That said, let me get the ball rolling:
I have only played structured PvP so far. I enjoy it, but let's just say I have room for improvement. I mostly played with a necro, but after finding that somewhat ineffective, I switched to a warrior mace/axe & sword and shield (I swap frequently). I seemed to do better on the warrior, but since I was playing late at night the battles were often 2v2. Even then I will lost ~60% of the time.
What I learned:
1. Reconfigure your skills asap. For example your Elite skill isn't allocated unless you go in and choose it.
2. The maps are a tad confusing (I think they are meant to be a little complex just to make it interesting) but they are fairly small and you pick it up pretty quick.
3. No one seems to care about defending objectives. It seems to be "capture and zerg to the next goal"
4. Someone on your team can hit <ctrl> + T to select a target and everyone can hit T to select that same target. People rarely do that though.
5. Not a lot of communication/teamwork going on. I am used to people defending a spot and calling out when they have incoming attackers. I suspect as I get to higher levels of glory that will change.
6. I cannot figure out how cannons work!
7. Necro pets blow. Necros themselves seem OK. They can actually take a decent amount of punishment, but really can't deal out much damage. They damage they do, definitely isn't very "bursty."
8. The warrior dealt a ton of damage, but was easily kited, slowed, knocked back and burnt down.
Ok that's enough stream of conscience. Other tips? I need 'em!

I haven't fricked with pvp yet...but good post.
Thieves run shite in pvp? Prob a lot of elementalists, thieves, and warriors huh?

Judging from my very limited experience, structured pvp seems to be mostly: guardians, warriors and thieves, with a random smattering of other things (I think mesmers would be next in that list).
