Authorities rescued a 58-year-old Eugene man who fell Sunday afternoon while climbing Mt. Thielsen in Douglas County. Michael Hawley was seriously injured in the fall which occurred as he was climbing near the summit of the mountain. Authorities said he sustained a broken arm, broken leg and head lacerations. Search and rescue teams from Douglas, Klamath and Jackson counties responded along with the Oregon Army National Guard, Brim Aviation, US Forest Service and state transportation department. Crews were lowered down by helicopter to where Hawley was. Hawley was then lifted out and taken to a Medford-area hospital.

I along with my climbing club are attempting to summit Mt. Thielsen this Saturday. Of course falling isn't in the plan. Hope the guy is ok.

Do you have an email address you post on here? I'm sure I'm going to have some question for you about Rainier and climbing equipment in general. Have you climbed Rainier yet?

I haven't climbed Rainier yet. Hopefully next summer. I refuse to pay the fee for a guided trip since I have people in my club who will take me up once I've gotten more experience for free. It's a very dangerous mountain and they won't take just anyone.

Ask away, if I can't answer I can direct you to someone/somewhere who can.

I plan on it. Can't wait, I've read it's the only mountain in the area where you can see the water in Crater lake, Oregons only national park.

I also be hiking up to the top of Diamond Peak on Sunday so I should have a lot of good pics. Weather is supposed to be good and hopefully it stays that way.

uh no....gonna be 5 men and we're all straight as an arrow.

The view from the VERY exposed summit will be almost orgasmic though.

Beautiful! I grew up in Douglas County, OR, but don't recall ever seeing Mt. Thielsen. Hope the climber recovers well. Good (or should I say "better") luck w/ your own climb. :-)

There are places in the lower 48 I could definitely live. Joseph, Oregon area being one. Parts of Idaho as well. Some beautiful country in the NW.

Cool! What city? What made you move away?

Thanks, hope our trip is safe. Wish we knew more about what happened to him.

@Roger, Joseph would be an awesome place to live. I love that area.

Yeah, my younger brother lives in the Tri Cities of Washington. Not too far from Joseph and Enterprise.

Sandpoint, Wallace and Stanley Idaho also are nice smaller towns/cities I could hang in for a while.

make sure you wear one of them head cameras in case you fall. You can scream your dying last words to the TDODB.

I remember and figured that was a reason for that area besides its pure awesomeness. That is my 2nd favorite area in the state. Just wish it was closer. Same goes for the area I'm headed to this weekend.

I haven't spent a lot of time in Idaho but I know there are some places I would like.

I wish I had one. Of course we won't be dying if we fall as we will have the summit protected. I don't believe that guy did. If not he's lucky he isn't dead. Some serious exposure there. Not a hard technical climb by any means but shite can happen regardless.

Oh yeah....carry on.

Stanley reminds me of Jackson, Wy but not as crowded. Some nice little towns in that state. Wallace, Sandpoint and Kellogg have fairly mild winters, but have access to skiing and other outdoor activities.

If you dig the mountains, you can't go wrong in any of the NW states. From N. California, thru Western Montana, parts of Wyoming, Oregon, Washington...there is something for everyone.

One of my favorite towns anywhere is Kelowna, BC in the Okanagan Valley. They have wineries and ski slopes and access to everything in between.

My father worked for International Paper. I was young when we moved to OR from the south because he was tranferred to a new IP paper mill. I grew up in Reesport on the coast, between North Bend and Florence. Went to OSU for two years. Decided to move back south to rest of family after my father died after my first year at OSU. Returned for my 20 year high school reunion. Also took my son to Lakeview, OR area this summer on a ground squrrel hunt for his high school graduation present. I'd never seen that part of OR. Definitely VERY different from where I grew up on the coast.

OR's a beautiful country w/ wonderful and interesting people. I hope I can visit some more in the future.

I don't have any problem with people that want to risk death and climb up these things. On the other hand, I don't feel even slightly sorry for them if they end up dead.

Have fun on your climb.
