Still, I think Lyanna may have died because she was wounded in the fight. The main evidence for this comes later in the series from the story of the Knight of the Laughing tree.

I also think that quote above reinforces R+L=J. The mention of rose petals and smells clearly links to a love affair with Rhaegar.

Earlier in the thread you guys were talking about swords and Ice...came across this on my reread:

"Catelyn had no love for swords, but she could not deny that Ice had its own beauty. It had been forged in Valyria, before the Doom had come to the old Freehold, when the ironsmiths had worked their metal with spells as well as hammers. Four hundred years old it was, and as sharp as the day it was forged. The name it bore was older still, a legacy from the age of heroes, when the Starks were Kings in the North."

So the current Ice wasn't the original...was there anything special about it or was it just a name for their swords?

So we obviously start getting into the R+L = JS discussion with some notable mentions in more one of our chapters. As said, one of the bricks to the foundation of that theory is Eddard's reaction to Catelyn once having questioned him about Ashara Dayne and Jon Snow. And that Jon is "of his blood".

I'm a little sad going back and reading these chapters knowing that it's a handful of the last times we see the Starks together and largely alive.

I didn't come to this conclusion at all - that Ned's Valyrian Greatsword was named after another from Stark history - and I love it.

The meaning I took from this passage was that the name Ice is the legacy in itself, not specifically a sword named Ice. Ice from the Age of Heroes could've been a stronghold, a man, a Direwolf...?

I definitely concede this possibility though. Gonna have to research on W.O to see what Ran & Co say or if Martin has mentioned anything about this. Hard to imagine we would discover anything new after all the dissection these books have gone through, but never say never...

Tid bits like this are what make this thread for me!

I mean thats not the "official" story (as if tower of joy has any "official" stories) but thats what most assume.

I liked how Jon's chapter ends with Tyrion walking back into the hall and, I'm paraphrasing here:

Tyrion walked back into the hall and cast a large shadow and for that moment he stood as tall as a King.

Not sure if there was any meaning behind this. With this reread, the lady sentence or two of the chapters has really stuck with me. Obviously Martin is intending to do so.

Probably because that light is from a Dark Star.

They being referred to in this chapter is Howland Reed, Wylla, and Aegon VI.

Let's start at the begining:

Rhaegar did not trust Mad King Aerys II. So he switch baby Aegon in King's Landing with another and hid the heir to the throne in Dorne.

Now, Rhaegar needed a replacement baby that looked like a Targ, so he had Arthur Dayne switch Aegon with Ashara Dayne's newborn...you know, the one with the purple eyes.

Rheagar then hid Lyanna, Jon, and Aegon VI at the Tower of Joy and ordered his three most trusted King's Guard to protect them all with their lives.

Thus, it is Reed, Aegon VI, and Wylla that are present when Lyanna dies in Ned's arms.
