how do "insiders" get the scoop?

I am curious as to what you guys know or suspect is the mechanism for reporters from ESPN and other sport organizations to obtain the "inside" info consistently. Do they keep inside informants on various teams on the kickback pay roll or is it through years of building legitimate friendships. just curious what the MSB thought about this topic.

mostly agents or 2nd teamers that want to feel famous

There are hangers on everywhere in sports, a lot of the "new" media are relying on them without verification which has damaged credibility.
Beat guys get a lot of info straight from players and coaches, some on the record, mostly off.

Steinbrenner had favored reporters he would feed stories to -- on condition he not be cited as the source -- to float as trial balloons to test how they would be received, i.e. "A-Rod is Total Bitch, Claim Yankee Insiders"

They have 1 informant on the team doesn't really know shite but he's a person they can use as their "source"

They have contacts could be agents or managers, could be players, could be someone in the front office.

They make phone calls and have connections. It's not rare for them to get phone calls with info from teams/sources
