He's probably going to make 3-4 times the money. NBDL doesn't pay shite. He'll probably make $300K to play in Croatia.

I think he is of Croatian heritage, so he gets a waiver of some sort for their roster limits. They have to have a certain amount of Croatians on the roster.

There was talk of him playing in Croatia even before the draft.

yea i realize that euro pays more than NBDL, but I dont get why Miami is allowed to retain his contract, not have to pay him shite, and let a euro team pay him.

It's basically taking any and all risk away from teams if they can hold rights to players, let them play in europe and get paid, and then either cut them or sign them depending on how they do over there.

seems like the NBA would want to force its teams to send players to the NBDL. Isn't that why it was created in the first place?

That may be related to the quirk in the system that allows him to be counted as a Croatian national. Similar to foreigners that get drafted but don't come over right away.

This is how it is in all sports. The team that drafts a guy retains his right, typically, for 1 year (until the next draft).

He was. He's been in college for 4 or 5 years though, has graduated, and has probably only a minimal chance of improving his stock by coming back.

I doubt he'd improve much from a mid second rounder
He's married
He's making some bank
He's a member of the Miami Heat organization

I don't see what else he could have done at LSU. Maybe guide us to another NIT appearance?

I haven't been keeping up, have the Heat already released him or is he not going to attempt to make the team?

Not exactly right. Jarvis Varnado who also is in the Heat system is from Tennessee, but was drafted by the Heat and stashed in Europe for a few seasons.

I'm not exactly sure of how the rule works, but you can retain the rights to a player you drafted for a few years as long as you continue to offer contracts to the players.

Example

Basically teams offer non-guaranteed contracts to the players. The other player signs overseas and the team retains the rights of the player till the next season, when they repeat the process.
