Biggest Punk Move Ever: The Last Starfighter

Setup:
Alex backs out of being a starfighter so Centauri must take him back to earth. When they get back, apparently Centauri has car trouble. The scene opens by Alex suggesting he's only a few miles from home and he could walk. He says goodbye and begins his journey.
Centauri pops out from under the car and throws a communication device to Alex (communo crystals), explaining what it is. He then takes off speeding down the road leaving Alex with a long hike back home.
Why didn't he offer a ride? Total dick move by Centauri.
Also, if it's a flying car, why didn't he land it closer to the trailer park?

Centauri tricked him with a video game. At the time, he thought there were hundreds of starfighters who were trained to fight. He ended up honorable.
And yes, she was in Weekend at Bernie's.
