Crackpot theory:
Ned Stark arrives in Starfall with Jon Snow and "Dawn" (which is actually lightbringer)
He stays there to have Jon nursed by Wylla since he's still an infant and not healthy enough to travel to Winterfell.
While at Starfell, Ned sleeps with Ashara in the process of consoling her over Arthur Dayne's death.
This is how Edric "Ned" Dayne was conceived, Ashara probably threw herself off the cliff or disappeared shortly after his birth.
This would explain Edric's milk mother Wylla as well.

Excellent theory that I had not heard before. Certainly Howland Reed was not killed at the TOJ. Probably Sir Arthur Dayne was killed there, by Howland Reed. Maybe Howland devised the plan to allow all of them live. Dayne would need to be disguised for a long while.
After time, memories fade, looks change. Who expects to come across a dead man, on or north of the wall?

Like I said, skirpnasty came up with it, but I've definitely bought in all the way.
I agree that Howland has to be alive.
I just think once Ned realized that R did not kidnap and rape L, and Dayne realized Ned wasn't going to harm JS but protect him, they'd have no reason to fight each other.
Ned knew Robert had to think they were dead though, because he couldn't explain JS to Robert.
Sending Dayne to The Wall would have made all the sense in the world. And Dayne would be close enough to make sure JS was truly being protected.
It just makes too much sense. Ned's respect for Dayne and his returning to Starfall and Ashara disappearing right after are too coincidental.
And Hugo, the timelines don't match up for Ned to be the father of Edric.
We're told Edric is only 12 in GoT. Ned was there years before.
I'm still not sure how exactly Edric fits in, because we aren't even told who his mother or father are, but I just think the fact that the Daynes named him Edric and nickname him Ned shows a close bond between the houses.
That wouldn't be the case if Ned killed the Sword of the Morning.
Can't wait to see that badass wielding Dawn against the Others.

I knew this would come into play, we need to see a Westerosi birth certificate.
It's plausible they kept his real age a secret to avoid suspicion.

This theory is making me hard. I want it to be true so bad.

Saw this on another forum:
quote:
Dany's dragons are Lightbringer.
She tried three times to hatch them, just like Azor Ahai tried three times to temper Lightbringer.
She sacrificed her husband for them, just like Azor Ahai sacrificed Nissa Nissa.
She was reborn from the fire amidst salt and smoke, under a bleeding star, and drew from the fire a weapon that can be used against The Others.
Dany's rebirth and drawing of Lightbringer from the fire was the true event - Stannis's rebirth was just a farce that Melisandre made him go through in an attempt to fulfill the prophesy.
Aemon doubted Stannis's Lightbringer because it doesn't emit heat. Dany's dragons emit heat.
Dawn may have been Azor Ahai's Lightbringer, but Dany has a new Lightbringer, one that will be much more effective in the War for Dawn than a mere sword.

It is definitely possible. I guess deep down though I just want to believe that Ned actually DID stay faithful to Cat. I don't see him breaking their vows for some reason.

It is definitely the coolest one I've come across IMO. My mind was 100% blown.

Yeah, but it did her dishonor to lie about it for 17 years.
Having little Ned gave him plausible deniability to protect Jon.
He had a bastard out of wedlock, this was true... It just wasn't Jon Snow.

Is "Dawn" made of Valryian Steel? If not, it won't do shite to the others.

I still don't think he did. I don't believe it. Ned was pure to a fault.

Well we don't really know what Arthur Dayne looked like, all we know was he was an amazing fighter (which Mance certainly is.)
We know Mance has the skill with arms and the leadership potential to become the King in the North.
Why was Mance sent to the wall? We know he saw Jon at Winterfell twice, once as a ranger in the Nightswatch. Why would Mance care to remember him?
Arthur Dayne is supposedly Rhaegar's best friend, they both are extremely talented singers and harp players.
We also know Mance has tasted the Dornishman's wife (being Dornish) and we know Mance has been known to steal a woman from the North.
The theory regarding Arthur Dayne is he fell in love with Lyanna at Harrenhall, but as a knight of the Kingsguard could not have her. Therefore his best friend, Rhaegar comes up with a solution. He'll take her and claim her... Benjen Stark helps Lyanna escape with Arthur to the ToJ... this is why he joins the Nightswatch.
A + L = J. When fighting at the ToJ, Howland incapacitates AD and Ned convinces him to take the black where he can sometimes visit and watch his son (Jon) grow up.
Mance wrote the Ramsay letter, because he wants to reveal the truth to his son in the Stark crypts and perhaps give him a certain sword which has been rumored to be in Lyanna's tomb.
This also matches with what Alfie has said about Jon being in a Luke Skywalker situation. Jon being Luke and Mance being Darth Vader... Jon is trying to turn Mance to the "light side" after Mance tried to turn Jon to the "dark side."

Not Valryian but it is said to be made from metal forged from the heart of a fallen star

The irony of Mance is him uniting the uncivilized wildling clans while the civilized world was tearing itself apart.

Boom. The letter is solved.

Dawn is in Starfall.
I can't, even though I want to, get behind Arthur Dayne being Mance. There are many good theories to prove he is, but it's just not enough. In the fight at ToJ many die including Hightower, Whent, Glover, Dustin, and Cassell. I don't think after they all died Ned, Howland, and Arthur would be like ok ok timeout. This is what we are going to do.
Also, Rhaegar was too interested in the Dragon has three heads prophesy. He knew he had to have another child. I can't not believe Jon isn't that child.

Yeah, not buying any of the Mance conspiracies.
Maester Aemon would have known and I believe Mance was raised by the Night's Watch.
