Couple weeks ago someone posted about the Cat Island Rebuilding Program.

I mentioned I had a bunch of pics from a recent trip out there in June.

Well here they are:

Holy shite! I used to go out there on my sea doo a lot, before Katrina(and obviously before BP). I'd never seen so many birds out there before. In fact I usually saw more eagles than pelicans out there. There were quite a few eagles nests on the isle Pre-K. I haven't been since...

ETA: Wait. We talking about the same Cat Island? The one off the Mississippi Coast? Isn't there a Cat Island somewhere off the South Central LA Coast? That the one u talking about?

I think he is talking about Cat Island, LA unless im mistaken..

Cool fact if someone didn't know: Cat Island got its name when the french rode up on Cat Island and saw raccoons everywhere and called them "cats"

Think this is the Ms coast. It looks like the casinos in the background of one of the pics.

The Cat Island off the Mississippi coast is a huge island. Used to go fishing in the cove on the west side if the island. Spent the night out there several times. Fishing was always good with trout and flounder aplenty.

I hope the OP is with WL&F or something like that. If not, you are a arse getting on the island spooking the birds and it is against the law to do so.

Still, nice pictures.

For all, this is the Cat Island in Louisiana

Another thing, as fishfighter said walking on this island is illegal, we had special permission to take soil samples to assess the situation that cat island is in. And from the soil samples we took Cat Island is one decent hurricane from getting wiped out completely.

You work or gov agency or private consultant? Does Plaquemines parish really have the necessary money to Do anything other than try to ring it with rocks?

For a coastal lesson on why rocks don't always work in LA, get on google earth and look at Time lapsed photos of Wine Island in Terrebonne in Google earth from 2004ish-2012. The island migrated out of the ring of rocks! Also, rocks were a disaster at East Timbalier, now you have a ton of submerged hazards and not Much island remaining to show for It.

Plaquemines should dredge and fill to inclease the acreage and get a little more bang for the buck.

I personally was just doing grunt work for a professor at LSU, drove the boat and helped build boardwalks into the marsh to sample soil and marsh plants.

But Cat Island is pretty much just made up of shell hash now, but personally they need to add in some kind of wave break with possibly rocks and then dredge up sand to rebuild the island itself.

As 99% of all those islanding. Thanks for clearing up that you were working there. Few years back, I had to rip someones arse for being on the island. They were screwing with the birds big time just for the frick of it. They were chasing babys with a net. I asked them WTF they were doing and one of the guys said they just wanted to hold one and take some pictures. I did report it to WL&F along with the boat numbers.

thanks for sharing the pics, pelicans are cool (but obviously messy and surely smelly) critters. Like other birds that nest like that, i always wonder how the hell they know their own babies from others. Always like seeing them along the MRGO rocks, hope that's not something we take for granted long term
