Anyone here use these books to train their dogs? A friend of mine recommends them but I would like to get others opinion on them.

At the time of their release these books were the greatest training aid available. They are still great books to help guide you through the process of training a dog. With time some easier to understand and apply information has come to light. If you are the proud owner of a new puppy spend the +/-$30 on a DVD called "Sound Beginnings" by Jackie Mertens. This DVD is geared towards labs but it will benefit a beagle just as well. What breed of dog? What are your hopes for this pup? Age of pup?

I have a German Short-haired Pointer. He is about 14 weeks old and I want to train him to be the pointer he is meant to be. He is smart and craving more and more training.

It never hurts to get information from multiple sources. The books were great in their day but I think there are better training aids out there. For a shorthair you will find that most of the upland is built in. Teach the basics, whoa, sit, come. Spend time with the dog keep it on a check cord. Enforce the commands he knows. Around 6 months he will learn that he is faster than you and will run and do what he wants when out of arms reach. Now is the time to go inside, get on the computer and order a shock/beeper collar. I really like the Dogtra brand...

Buy the Sound Beginings and watch your pup respond to some of the things included in the video. I really liked it and I bought it not having a pup at the time. I have since used it on pups with sometimes humorous results. It basically shows you how to introduce the pup to things without creating issues that will need to be fixed at a later date.

Each shorthair is different when it comes to retrieving, some love it, some you can make do it, and some will give you the regardless...

I have the DVDs. The basic commands have been helpful. Haven't really gone into the more complex stuff.
