Looking to spike my credit 40 points or so in the next year if possible. I have established credit, just wondering what would be the easiest way to get it up as much as possible. It is sitting at 700 presently and all my balances hang around 20 percent. I have a few inactive accounts that I cancelled recently, and don't have a charge card such as american express etc. Which card gives me the best options and should I go that route?

May have hurt you. The average age of your accounts is one factor. Depending on how old they were, it could have reduced that average.

A Credit card will certainly help if you don't have any. Are far as which one, there is no correct answer, you have to find one that will benefit you the most, such as certain rewards. JUst don't pay annual fees and such

There are so many different things that go into a credit score, so it is very difficult to determine exactly how to hike a score by ____ points. The general consensus is as follows:

35% payment history
30% amounts owed
15% length of credit history
10% new credit
10% types of credit used

So most important things are to pay on time, keep your balance to credit limit ratio low on revolving accts (under 10% is best), and to have a long established credit history.

You mentioned that you recently cancelled inactive accounts....that might not have been the best thing to do. Were they revolving accts? Were they in good standing (i.e. have you ever been late)? When you cancel accounts they can effectively make your credit history look shorter.

Also, you said that your balances are around 20%...i'm confused because you mention that you do not have credit cards. What type of balances are those?

I have a couple cards I never use. Haven't closed them though. It hurts me that I never use them?

I would make sure and use them every so often so that the creditor doesn't close them due to the inactivity. Just use it and pay it off before the statement date.

I would make it a point to use them once every few months or so. If it goes 6-12 months without using, it could update on your report as dormant. Not sure how it affects your CR points wise though. Also, your credit card company could close them out on you (or at least not renew you at expiration date) if not active enough which in turn could possibly lower your average age of credit.
