Fans gathered around fields early Monday morning, parking their cars on the side of the road at two area high schools.

That can mean only one thing — high school football is officially here.

All area LHSAA schools conducted their first official football practice Monday as coaches started evaluating their teams in anticipation for their season openers, most of which occur Aug. 31.

In about three and a half weeks, three certain Ouachita Parish teams will begin their titles defenses also. West Monroe (Class 5A), Neville (Class 4A) and Ouachita Christian (Class 1A) started that quest Monday, though, as they filled holes and prepared for what they hope is another 15-game season.

Neville cornerback Laurence "Hootie" Jones broke up a John Diarse pass on Monday during a red zone drill, and the offense pleaded with coaches for a pass interference call while the defense cheered Jones' effort.

Jones and Diarse joked with each other on their way to the next drill, and both said they like the offense-defense rivalry.
