I don't pretend to be some kind of expert on the matter, a perfect observer, or even some flaming liberal that expects absolute equality across the board. Over the last twelve months or so, though, I've watched Mad Men, Breaking Bad, the first 5 seasons of The Sopranos, and The Wire, all of which are universally acclaimed on here. One thing I've noticed, though, especially if you add The Walking Dead into the equation, is that female characters are pretty much the most worthless and easily despised characters on the show.

Who ACTUALLY likes Skyler (BB), Carmela (The Sopranos), Betty Draper/Francis, and Lori (The Walking Dead)? Now, I'm not asserting something like there's some mad conspiracy against women. But why is there such a dearth of strong female characters in television who are actually likable? Am I just a sexist a-hole (entirely probable), or does it seems that such characters are written for us to dislike them? Am I just watching the wrong shows?

And of course there are exceptions like Joan Holloway, but generally we all just complain about the women. I don't know, just my thoughts, ignore it if you will.

The women characters in Game of Thrones are pretty solid.

I pretty much agree with you.

Jessica Pearson from Suits is a really strong, likeable character.

Ya know, NIH, I haven't watched GoT yet. I'm going to eventually, but I want to finish season 6 of the Sopranos first. Interesting to hear GoT has strong female characters, though. I'd expect them to be even more marginalized just based upon the fantasy/medieval setting. Very interesting

Yep. And even on Mad Men, Betty Draper is a bitch but you still have Peggy and Joan who are solid characters as well. Hell, some of the best scenes Don Draper has had on Mad Men has been with Peggy.

I'm also pretty sure The Walking Dead is going to have one bad arse chick with Michonne next season if they stay true to the comic.

I think bad female characters are maybe more noticeable but there's also bad male characters in shows too.

The Bechdel Test for films is simple. To pass, a film has to have:

1) At least two women in it
2) who talk to each other
3) about something besides a man

Try it in TV shows also.
