Silent commitments???

I'm trying to figure out why a player would be a silent commitment? For example I've read that Gilmore is one. Why not just commit publicly?

they do this to take advantage of recruiting perks, enjoying the situation where coaches promise you the world .while kissing your feet. But you get to travel on their dime.and meet people. There are scouting service interviews, sports blogs, twitter.a big experience to most kids.Making an early commit cut much of the attention.

After all was said and done, Landon Collins was a silent commit to Al Obama for two years.

I'm hearing that JUCO DT Ratphuc Mobley is one of our biggest current silent commits. But please don't tell Bama or they'll steal him.

So true. If LC had been up front and honest, he could have said from the get go I am going to commit to Bama. Then we would have gotten over it and moved on and not a million post speculating on the subject. Nothing wrong his going to Bama it's his life and choice, just think he could have handled it much better for all concerned.

No you would have had the obligatory "this is not not over" and "coaches gonna put the press on and turn him" and "in the end its hard for kids to go out of state threads."

Some silents are the kids choice, some the school's choice. The reason for the kid being silent by his choice is usually twofold, they aren't exactly secure in their commitment or fear of backlash at home or they want to enjoy the perks of recruiting. The schools do it to hold back the number of guys at a position in order to pursue other kids. Also sometimes used as a ploy to keep other school confident about a kid and causing them to miss on other prospects. Precisely what I think is going on with Demarcus Walker and Bama. They're playing UF. Sometimes it comes back on you but most of the time they don't.
We haven't had good luck with silents. If Gilmore is one then I hope it works better than the last few we've had(Debose and Jernigan are the 2 most known about). Only speaking about OOS kids. I believe Jefferson and Smith were both silent this year instate.

The recruit that went to the longhorns last year said he was going to texas but said lsu to keep the local presure off him. Then there was janzen who had planned to go to the vols but said he was told by tenn not say anything to the LSU staff

Unless they are never going back then this makes no sense to me.
I think in most cases they are given bad advice by coaches who care little about the consequences.

What are our chances at getting Tim Williams? It would be upsetting to lose the No.1 player in the state again, especially since he's from BR

It's hard to say. He has not actually said that he is set on going out of state as some Florida media outlets suggested. However, he mentioned that Miami and FSU were recruiting him the hardest right now. So, it just depends on what you read into that. To me, that sounds like he really is not that interested in those two schools but likes that they want him.

Yep. Another in the long line of recruiting myths.
