The Athletic Department will contribute $5.5 million to help balance this year’s budget. Of this amount, $1.5 million will be used to fund the Cox Academic Center for Student Athletes and the remaining $4 million will be used to protect the academic core.

From chancellor's email.

Wrong Board? German? I did search, but we all know how that goes.

How the frick is 1.5 mil included in that figure they're "giving to the university" if it's for student athletes?

So really they're giving 4 million to the university and keeping 1.5 mil to upgrade the cox center for the athletes.

I'm glad they're giving back though.

wasn't the cox center funded by the university originally and not the athletic program?

How dare you post that! We all know that TAF and the Athletic Department steals from LSU every year!

Haven't they been doing this, though? I know they've been giving money to the school since people always think it's the other way around.

Great. Now raise tuition to offset every other cost.

If a regular student slips some cash to the tutor for a good time, can they use them?

Yes I went to LSU. The only you can use to my knowledge is the big auditorium and the bathroom upstairs. The computer lab upstairs can only be logged onto by athletes. What else is in there?

Sounds to me that they're charging the fans $5.5M more than they need to be.

Absolutely. LSU is one of two major universities whos AD actually regularly returns funds to the Academic departments. Nebraska is the other one IIRC.

All students use this facility. I had classes in the auditorium when I was there and also used the computer lab.

They also use the auditorium for graduation ceremonies, my wife got her masters in the auditorium.

As others have said, all students use that building and they use it for a ton of major presentations seeing as it's one of the biggest classrooms in the country.

Aside from that, the people that benefit the most are STUDENT athletes. It's not just for the football team either. You do realize that the vast majority of them do not go on to play professionally, but instead get a job like the rest of us? They just so happened to be good enough to play collegiate athletics. I know I wish I had that option

Great! One of only 12-15 athletic departments that actually turn a profit and fans still bitch about something. Bobby is crushing Higher Ed in Louisiana and the department is stepping up and helping out.

This is where you cheer and talk about how awesome the department is for helping out in tough times.
