Remember in 04 when the Lakers added Karl Malone and Gary Payton to their already stacked tag team of Kobe and Shaq? This years additions of Antwuan Jamison, Steve Nash, and possibly Dwight Howard mimics that effort. Will it work? We all know the outcome of that season with the Lakers getting pwned in the Finals by the Pistons.

Well, one drastic difference is that Dwight is in his prime and a long term building block if he's really willing to re-sign. He'd be their future in the post-Kobe era

Yea the best center in his prime is comparable to a washed up glove/mailman.

not even close.

there is no Kobe/Shaq feud to destroy the team, Nash won't be trapped in a system he doesn't fit in like Payton in the triangle, and Jamison was not brought in to be the starting PF like Malone.

Jamison and Nash are two tenured stars with one last shot at a dream

If they trade for Howard both Bynum and Gasol will probably be gone.

Nash still plays at a very high level, and Howard is basically in his prime.

Congrats, nice thread.

Aww NO. Bynum will be gone but not Gasol. Jamison will come off the beach to provide a scorer for the second unit. Metta World Peace will still start at the 3 position.

Jamison can play the 3 pretty well too. I wouldn't be surprised if he got minutes there backing up Ron Ron

MWP is lucky he didn't get waived via amnesty.

He needs to get his head out of his arse, but that's been true of him for 99% of his career.

I think you're just hoping, cause that is unlikely

if Malone doesn't frick his knee up I think that team wins the title.

at any rate, as has been said, the new additions to this squad aren't quite as washed up, and this team looks deeper.

I agree. I thought the Lakers would use the amnesty clause on him. But I like MWP as a defender especially if they get Howard.

I think a lot of people in this thread are forgetting how good Payton and Malone were when they went to the Lakers. Payton averaged 20/8 the year before and Malone 21/8. They were old at at the end of their careers, but still really good.

That 03-04 team was amazing when healthy. Payton averaged 15/5/4 and Malone 13/9. Their age just caught up to them in the playoffs. Payton was terrible in the playoffs averaging only 8 PPG on 36% shooting (4 PPG on 32% shooting in the finals). An injured Malone went for 5 PPG while shooting 33%.

Howard is in his prime so you dont have to worry about him wearing down, but Nash and Jamison are a bit of a worry.

The 2004 Lakers team didn't have enough players in their prime. They had 6 players who had played 10 or more years in the league (Fox, Grant, Malone, Payton, O'Neal, and Bryon Russell). Only 4 players on the team had played between 2-10 years and that was Kobe, Fisher, Devean George, and the great talent that was Stanislav Medvedenko.

this

Plus you had Kobe missing games because of the rape case. Kobe and Shaq fighting with each other. Shaq wanting a contract extension. Shaq missing 15 games. There was just a lot of turmoil going on that had nothing to do with talent and ability.

The Lakers were rolling at the start of that season before Malone went down with that injury. They were 20-5 at that point and on pace to win 66 games.
