Biggest Gateway Drug? Alcohol

LINK

quote:

Alcohol — not marijuana — is the gateway drug that leads adolescents down the path toward more serious substances, a new University of Florida study shows.

The findings may not settle a decades-old debate over how drug abuse begins, but it could help educators and policymakers build more effective drug-prevention programs, said Adam Barry, an assistant professor and researcher in the College of Health and Human Performance.

“By recognizing the important predictive role of alcohol and delaying initiation of alcohol use, school officials and public health leaders can positively impact the progression of substance use,” he said. “I am confident in our findings and the clear implication¬¬s they have for school-based prevention programs. By delaying and/or preventing the use of alcohol, these programs can indirectly reduce the rate of use of other substances.”

The idea of a "gateway" drug is ridiculous to begin with. For the most part, nobody jumps right into heroin or crack abuse because they are not as easily available or affordable as alcohol or weed. So when researchers look at these individuals and ask what their first drug experience was, 99.9% of the time it will be weed or alcohol. Correlation is not causality.

Doesnt make sense.. There are people that smoke week but dont drink to begin with??

I think hormones and stupid laws have more to do with alcohol and drug abuse than anything else. Otherwise people would probably just use in moderation.

horse shite. i've been drinking consistenly (at times heavily ) for 31 years and i dont do any other drugs. Other than a stretch with steroids in my 20s. Alcohol ain't the culprit.

Easy to get if you are actively looking for it. I guess by availability I meant that you can find a lot more people that have weed or access to weed than those hardcore drugs.

Look at usage rates and alcoholism treatment rates in Europe. They are measurably less than in the good ole USA

For me it was Paregoric

In the late 60's it was an OTC med and as a baby/toddler I had horrible stomach issues

I spent the next 25-30 years chasing that same high

Laws are very different in Europe, they do not favor the users in any way.

Most people grow up faster. So it is out of their system.

If we had the laws they have things here would be very different.

I lived in Europe for quite a while.
