I'm definitely considering purchasing gw2. I remember play the first guild wars and loved it. Then I heard about WoW and that sent me on a downward spiral since 04

There were a few threads with reactions and such on here. Check it out.

Haven't played since the original guild wars.... Logged some hours on that bad boy.....

Thinking about getting this one.... Is the gameplay similar to the first?

I'm definitely getting gw2 now. I forgot how much fun it was. Only thing I remember about gw1 was getting ran from some snowy place to some place way south of it. Bought the best gear and teleported back. I took a warrior monk like an hour to run us there.

Oh btw, is the whole thing mmo or is it like the old gw where you could only interact with people in a city

Full MMO and it's awesome.

Although, WvWvW is on a cross-server setup and sPvP is also lobbied out of the main world.

This is one of my favorite things about the game. I always hate when you hit that wall that seems to appear around lvl 40 or so in games when leveling just turns into a long grind. The combat in this game is amazing. A little advice for people who haven't tried the beta: I would pick the classes you want to try and find what weapons give you what kind of attacks. Also don't stand still in combat, strafing is your friend.

Checking them out now. What will we be focused on? pvp or pve? I remember pvp in guild wars not being very fun (at least for me). And I would like to know what profession to choose (for the guild). I don't have a preference so I'll just choose one that will help out ole war skule the most.

Both.

Muppet will be running most of the PvE stuff. I'll be running the PvP. If we get busy enough, we may split PvP into sPvP and WvWvW.

Everyone should plan to do everything though.

If this was because you got lost in "build wars" you may be much happier in this one.

Well, really, pick what you like. Every class can actually do everything to some degree. And there are no tanks. So pick your flavor and find that right skills that you want to mix. PvE is easy to plan for, make sure to switch out who's taking damage. Have a good mix of control and dps with a shot of buffs in there. AND don't stand around, ha.

PvP is different. But still if you like the ideas of Rangers, be one, the group and you can adapt to that choice. Really, classes are extremely flexible in this one.

Glad to hear I have played some form of ranger/beastmaster going back to my pencil and paper days.

so, there's really no bad class to choose? i've always liked playing a char that is flexible and not pigeonholed into one thing

As of last word, Rangers were Top Tier OP in PvP.

No class is in this.

That doesn't mean that what you do is the best at any point.

Fr instance:

Guardians have a lot of choices to make support/defensive/ 1v2 builds. They don't go all out DPS, but HOW they DPS is different than say a warrior. A warrior has more health and higher damaging attacks, but in general, a guardian can stand toe to toe with them.

Guardians have LESS choices for DPS builds, but they do have them. Warriors have less choices for support/defensive builds, but they do have them.

Ranger utilities can be devastating, but I think the real issue is that greatswords have been overpowered for every class across the board.

ETA: Also, pets are largely useless right now.

Word. I never had a big problem with them in PvP. I hated Thieves 3 hit kills much more.

Greatsword, although it has good skills, is weak on the Guardian. Mostly because Sword may be elevated a bit since it does equal damage to the greatsword with far better off hand options.

I'll admit Guardians are also Top Tier with Rangers and Necros as of right now.

This is true. And sad, but didn't they make strides in the last beta?

Mesmer with a greatsword is hilariously over-the-top. One of the reasons I love the class, even if illusions could be a little more effective when you "detonate" them.

You just spam laser beams from your swordpoint at range. The farther away you are, the more damage it does.

I actually only played Ranger for a couple of hours during the last beta. I didn't notice a difference, but that doesn't mean it wasn't there. I did notice that in any given event, there were still dead pets everywhere. I can't speak to the competence of the players, though.
