Used car shopping - online resources?

What online resources do you utilize for used car shopping? What's the best site for finding cars locally? And is there something good for determining value?

Autotrader.com is my favorite site to use, but there's also cars.com. For a no haggle website, use carmax.com, but be aware that the prices are set a little higher (the cost of no haggle).

Warning! Use a trusted pay site! Friend just went off the trusted site at seller's insistence, and lost >$20,000.
The money went to a bank in eastern europe less than 2 hours after he made the deal.
No car, of course, and FBI says they can't help him.

According to the sherriff's office up here, they get more than one case a week like this.

Carmax.com
Find the closest CarMax location near you.
You're welcome.

Holy shite.
That would seriously put me in a depression. How could you recover from something like that?

This is why I will never purchase a car from anyone other than a dealer from a website like autotrader.
I would seriously contemplate jumping off a building if that happened to me.

I recently bought a car I found on Autotrader.com from a Dallas dealer, Ecarone.com. Very satisfied?

If anyone is in the car business and can get their hands on the "black book," I'd love to get my hands on an outdated copy (1 + month or so).

If you don't want the best deal, this.
I just bought a 2005 Suburban Z71 for $4500 under retail. I found it on Autotrader. Only haggling I did was none of the BS fees dealers try to tack on.

From my experience, NADA prices are very inline with the "black books." They aren't exact of course, but a good start for determining values.

With so many online resources these days I think "book value" as a concept is outdated, or at least much less valuable than it once was. You can create your own spreadsheet of asking prices by looking at cars.com, autotrader, eBay, etc. and compare nearly identical vehicles.

I've bought two cars since 2007, and both were off of Craigslist. One of them ended up being a guy who lived two doors down from a friend of mine whose wedding I stood in as a groomsmen.
Brought them both to my mechanic & he gave them his seal of approval. Both of them were 10+ years old with 130K+ miles on them.
(They were both Toyota 4Runners)
I spent less than $11K combined on both of them. I had some DB total one two years ago with 204K miles on it. The one I have now I've put 30K miles on or so and will drive the wheels off it as well.
So I'd say Craig's List.

Your friend isn't very smart, is he?

If I recall correctly, my experience was entirely different the last time I was car shopping (NADA vs. Black Book).

They have poor customer service, but they have good prices. It's normally worth the drive to Houston.
