For baits we use turkey necks, or chicken legs. Turkey necks work better though.
Interesting. I would've thought the one with more meat. Course, I have found chicken to be better than melt- which surprises the hell out of me since melt is so bloody.

We are mostly looking for scent trail, and something that will hold up after being in the water and chewed on for awhile.

I don't know about this. I went 2 weekends ago and didn't catch a crab on chicken, all on melt.

I caught 12 dozen in 5 hours last Friday in Bayou Des Allemands by boat. They're catching well in traps in Lake Des Allemands, so I went try with 18 nets in the Bayou, since it's a more concentrated area than just going out into the lake. That's where the crabs come in from, and it's more conducive for nets. Of the 12 dozen, about half were nice/average and the other half were small. But it's close to home and a lot less effort than going to Pointe-Aux-Chene or something like that. I don't know where you're coming from, but you could launch under the Des Allemands bridge on the St. Charles Parish side, and go towards lake Des-Allemands (towards the train bridge/old 90). I came in from the lake and fished between the first (on right)and second (on left) camps coming from the lake. That's not far at all from the launch under the bridge. I used chicken and fished in water about 5-6', about 30-40 yds off the bank. With 20-30 minute sets, I was catching 1-3 per net.

Per pound, leg quarters in the 10lb bag at Wal-Marks are the best value for bait, and give you a good chunk in the net if you cut them each in half.
