Hotel/Travel CC -Amount of points to redeem with Hilton Rewards card?

For those that have the Hilton Rewards Amex (or if it comes in anything else.)
How many points does it generally take to get 1 free night?
I'm thinking about getting this card. I don't travel much but would plan on putting everything on it so when I do, I could stay in a nice place at a discount or even free.
edit- I finally found a page with the #'s. Looks like roughly 30,000 to 50,000 points for a night at most places.
How fast can you rack up points?
Do yall like that card?

My wife has it and we love it. Points accumulate quickly, plus if you are staying at a Hilton you get tons of bonus points during the year. My wife typically accumulates about 4-7 free nights per year - easily enough to justify the $75 annual fee.

Are you a Diamond member? You can call the Diamond Desk and sweet talk the lady into letting you use the ol' Point Stretcher program for extended stays. Its not longer offered on the website; takes 10,000 off each night if over four nights.
I accumulate around 800,000 points a year; but I had to spend nearly 200 nights in hotels last year ,

No, I don't even have the card, just curious about the points etc.
How much would a night cost out of pocket?

Wow, that's a ton. Like I said I don't travel much at all. May stay in a hotel 3 or 4 days a year. Probably would travel more though if I had a nice, cheap/free place to stay.

That would be perfect.
How much $ does it take to build that?
Do you travel often?

Cost depends on the Hilton brand and location. A Waldorf or conrad brand at a large tourist destination may run 75,000 a night. The Hampton Inn on Interstate-who-gives-a-frick in Crap Town, USA might be 15,000.
Each hotel only has a limited number of reward vouchers per night.
Just go to Hilton.com and search for hotels using 'Reward Points'.

So the CC company doesn't compensate the hotel?

Every month you get points credited to your Hilton HHonors account based upon the amount of money you spent on your CC the previous month. Then you just go on to Hilton's website and book a room using your points rather than cash. If you plan on going during a prime holiday or something, book early as there are a limited number of rooms that can be rented using points (I have never had trouble getting a room on my points, just be aware of when you want to go and book in advance).
As far as how much we spend and how much we travel: we don't spend an insane amount of money (were both young professionals right out of college). We probably pay for 3-4 nights of hotels a year and we will use 4-6 free nights per year. You rack up a ton of points just by putting your day to say expenditures on the card.

I got one about a month ago. When I signed up there was a program where if you spend $750 in the first 3 months you got 40,000 points. Which, to my surprise, I've almost reached that in one month.
Do Wal-mart, Lowe's, Home Depot, etc count? I dont want to use it there if I wont accumulate points.

You accumulate points wherever you spend money. There are different levels of "points per dollar spent" depending on where you spend it. If i remember correctly, when my wife got her card, the standard rate is 3 points per dollar, with certain expenses (gas, groceries) getting 6 points per dollar and any money spent at the Hilton restaurant chain gets 9 points per dollar.

Marriott program is better IMO.
The SPG Amex is actually the best but they don't have as many hotels as Hilton/Marriott/IHG

In my experience, you get your best bang for your buck by using Hilton points when staying at the nicest hotels they have.
For example:
Doubletree on Canal St. - 30,000 pts (90 bucks a night)
The Waldorf Astoria (Manhattan) - 60,000 pts (650 bucks a night)

I'm pretty sure all standard rooms in Waldorf brand hotels is 60k/night.

For me, the difference between Marriott and Hilton cards is that I can get Hilton diamond status just by my annual spending, but no matter how much money you spend on the Marriott card you can only get their top status from nights spent in the hotel.

Yea, same goes for Marriott. I can use 50,000 points to stay at the Ritz or 20,000 to stay at a Courtyard.

How much do you have to spend?
Do you get more points per dollar at diamond levels?

$40,000 in a year for Diamond; $20,000 for Gold.

For Hotel stays, yes. For Credit Card spending, no.
A fair value for Hilton Points is ~.7-.8 cents a piece. You get far more bang for your buck on multi-night stays (4 nights usually being the sweet spot). That said, Hilton has been offering more cash & point awards that make using points for shorter stays more valuable.
If you're really interested in Hilton redemptions, read through this thread.
