The notorious Uncle Carl officially got popped. It's insane how large his gambling ring actaully grew. Hopefully, he can't collect my debt from the pen.

It's absurd to me that sports gambling is illegal in most of this country.

That makes sense to me. It's a states rights issue, each state makes the decision for itself.

What is absurd to me is that so many states are so arse backward and think that it's better to outlaw something than to legalize it and shed light on it.

There is a reason point shaving scandals come from San Diego, Hawaii, and Toledo. There is also a reason those scandals get caught in Vegas. When there is a black market for something, nothing is off limits. Because the casinos really like keeping their licenses, they do everything they can to stifle any improprieties involving their books.

Tax is the underlying factor.

Nah my debt isn't big enough for him to worry about ($900). I'm small fish in his pond. One guy I know skipped out on $15k before moving to a different city, and Uncle Carl claimed it wasn't worth his time to go after it. He just cut off everyone involved with said person.

why so?

because everyone would say they "operate a sports gambling ring" and show losses and never pay tax?

The best year I've ever had my bookie got busted. A couple weeks left in the NFL playoffs and I was up $2,300. Dude got busted for steroids, coke, horse tranquilizer, disco bicuits, and a dozen or so other narcotics. I don't think they even bothered with the sports book charge..

Dude,

He can easily collect your debt. He asks one of his associates to collect for him. Money is money to these guys. Don't think for a second that any money he is owed is insignificant. In fact 900 is the right amount for him to collect.

In fact it's actually easier to collect form you. His associate goes to you and you figure it's easier paying 900.00 than the alternative.

They've been trying to, but they can't. There is a federal law that arguably only carved out the exception for Vegas. It's actually sort of a nuanced legal issue that I don't completely understand. You can google it and find more information if you're interested. Both NJ and DE were trying to legalize sports gambling to try to raise revenue for their respective states. DE got sued by the NFL, among others. DE lost the suit at the state supreme court level, and didn't try to take it to the SCOTUS. Not sure what happened with NJ. They may have just seen what happened with DE and decided to not pursue it any further.

I'm not worried about it. I've owed him $900 since football season, and I havent heard a word about it. If someone knocks on my door, then I'll cut them a check. I've got the cash, but I'm not going out of my way to give it to this guy. Most of my friends are up or down in the 5k range, so I figured he go after them first.

There a bunch of rumors floating around. He got in trouble before the 2011 football season, so people are saying that it was run by the Feds last season. They were apparently building their case and trying to get people on tax evasion. It was weird because this is the first year we didn't deal with Carl directly. We had a new guy that would always make excuses why we couldnt talk to Carl. I have no inside information. I'm just relaying what I hear.
