Playing in the Northwoods League. Mainieri is having them try him out as a starter over the summer. Picked up the win last night.

5.0 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 2 K, 57 pitches

We're definitely gonna need someone to step in and replace KG

Nice. I just hope we come up with someone to replace him in the pen if he ends up a starter. Plus we need to find a closer.

Am I the only one here who really wishes Cotton would remain in his current role?

Don't get me wrong, he could be a great SP, but to have a junk throwing lefty come in after a team has seen 5+ innings of heat coming from Nola, Eades and whoever our #3 is, to me, is perfect. That is a difficult adjustment for hitters to make.

Exactly. As a starter we only get to use Cotton once per weekend. I am not a fan. I like having our second best pitcher being able to throw in 2 or 3 games. Nola is going to be dominant next year, so it will really boil down to whether or not Eades can get it back, and who a 3rd starter might be. As we saw, you need 3 good starters to move late into the postseason.

I tend to agree with you, except throwing in 2 or 3 games per week still means he only gets 2-5 innings, and when you start you can get 5-9 innings per week. If your one of the best arms on staff, then you might as well get as many innings and outs as possible for the team, even if they are in one game.

He very well may. I think they are just doing this to see how he does when they extend him more than a couple of innings. Gives you another possible option heading into the fall.

my biggest question with cotton as a starter is how he'd fair his 2nd or 3rd times through the order. guess he'll prove that this summer

How this kid didn't get into the rotation after Eades began to struggle is questionable.

I 100% agree with you. and 2 years ago I would have said no way, but he increased the velocity on his fastball this past year and if he could add just a little mustard to that fastball I could see him being a guy who hits his spots with his fastball the 1st time through the lineup then startts throwing the junk 2nd and 3rd time through to keep hitters off balance. A lot of MLB pitchers do similar only throwing their fastball early in the game.

He was getting into the high 80s towards the end of the year. I agree that, if he were consistently around 88 mph, he could get through the lineup a couple times.

ETA: That is essentially the velocity that Roth throws with for SC.

His velocity and going deep into games isn't as big as issue as people make it out to be. If he locates his pitches and can throw 3 pitches for strikes in fastball counts, he can throw complete games.

Changing speed along with good location works all day long..no matter how many times through the lineup.

Yea 88 isn't bad at all. Its just locating and I think he could do it.

People who consider Cotton simply a junk baller isn't giving him enough credit. He has some good breaking pitches, but I think he has the fastball to be a really good starter. We should have some solid arms coming in from HS and hopefully one could fill the middle relief void he would leave if moved to SP

Austin Ross was not bad at all as a third starter.

I think Cotton could be very effective as a starter b/c of the new bats. I think with the old bats, he wouldn't do good facing a lineup twice.
