Do you think that Eric Gordon is worth a max deal?

I personally do not think so, based on what he has shown. Certainly worth a nice $12-13M, but I think it would be a mistake to spend that kind of money on him at this point.

I am just trying to figure out the direction the FO is going right now since we all of the sudden are sitting pretty as far as cap space.

Some other team will and we will have to match it.

No, but I only think a few players are actually worth it. Will he get it? I'm thinking yes.

I hope you are right, but I just get the feeling we make a bold move on him because of all the cap space we have. Ideally, you would like to pay him and have enough room for a max k, but I havent looked at the numbers to even see if that is a possibility.

I would love it if we sign him for less than the max but if that's what it takes to sign him I say we have to do it. Still, I think his value isnt worth a max deal but we can't afford to let him walk either. So he's worth it for us if that's what it takes but he's not worth it for other teams. If that makes sense.

hell no. i actually wouldnt mind trading him at this point, if we could pull that off.

How much will his injuries affect the growth of this team?

i dont really trust him as the cornerstone of this franchise

i think we will be a bit short on offering a big contract to a big name FA. i think we will be at around 35-40M after the draft

I dont know how that would work considering he is a RFA, a sign and trade wouldnt really make sense because that team could just offer him, but I'm not really sure. I tend to agree with you that I just dont see him being that valuable.

We need to start talking to the teams that will offer him a max contract and pit them against each other to increase Gordon's trade value, then trade him to the least attractive team from the player's perspective. Or sign him in the 12-15m range.

Its pretty much Indiana or bust for that option. Only team he would go to with the money to do that (Assuming Dallas signs Deron Williams)

I could see Cuban offering a max to Gordon just so that we'd have to match it. It's a no-brainer business wise - either he slightly overpays to fill a need and rob a rival of their best player, or he steals about $3 million in cap space from a rival for the next 5 seasons.

IMO we will definitely match any and all offers for EG10, even max offers.

I see what you are saying, but he would be gambling that we would match. We could not match and now offer D Will bc they no longer have the cap space to do so (although I realize Cuban would not have much of a problem going into the Luxury tax). I would think they offer EG and DW max, that's not the greatest team going forward.

per NBA rules, you can't offer the contract if you don't have it. He would have to go after Gordon before Deron Williams, and convince Williams not to talk to other teams

Yeah, Dallas adding DWill to a max (~$18m IIRC) would put them around $60m. Amnestying Heywood would drop it to around $52m. Cap should be around $58m. Can't go over the cap on a FA without using an exception, which Gordon is way beyond the MLE obviously. I don't see how Dallas is a possible destination if they get DWill unless he signs for less than the max to free up the room to get Gordon, in which case he's fricking himself over if we match.

And I do think Gordon is worth matching a max offer for.

I like Eric Gordon, nevertheless, I just can't get behind the idea of giving him a max deal. He has yet to play a full season since he has been in the league and only went 9 games this season. Even if you look past how fragile he's been (which shouldn't be possible), his production doesn't warrant $80 for 5 seasons. Paying top dollar for potential while disregarding reality is a formula for disaster that has been proven by quite a few perennial lottery teams. If we can't keep him for a more reasonable gamble ($11-12 range?) Id rather we just save our money for a better bet.
