New rifle shipped to Bowie yesterday. Going to get it scoped out either today or tomorrow. Originally I had planned on a Leupold VX-1 3x9x40. Longest shot at our property is no more than 150 yards. For 70 bucks more, I can upgrade to the VX-1 3x9x50 OR the VX-2 3x9x40. I'm NOT spending any more than 300 bucks on this so none of that "Go for the top of the line" stuff.

Don't forget you need good mounts and a good base...

I doubt you can get the VX2 AND mounts/base for under 300. The VX1 is a good scope and you won't be disappointed. As for 40mm vs 50mm, meh. The 50 might be a little better late in the evening, but how much better is debatable. Just get the one you like more. I prefer 40mm because I can mount it lower.

I'm considering the rings exempt from the price.

If I buy a new rifle, I don't care how far or close the shot maybe. What I really need is a high quality optic that lets me see clearly at twilight. Light gathering is a must.

Ruger M77 30-06 Synthetic / Stainless. No pics yet. Eating lunch, oil change and inspection sticker, THEN Bowie's to get the rifle and THEN Bass Pro for the scope, case, sling, cartridge holder, and probably 2 boxes of ammo.

Went with the VX-2 3x9x40 and snagged a sling and cartridge holder while at BPS. The finished product is a nice bit of gun porn if I do say so myself. Thanks for all the advice, OB'ers!

Thanks, and yes, they did. Gonna do a true sighting in on Sunday back home when I have 100 yards and no sissy city folk neighbors to call the cops. Bowie gave me some paper that looks like a huge pain in the arse on how to break in the barrel on a rifle. Sounds like a load of crap to me but only thing I've ever owned is a handgun which I clean religiously.

Didn't read the whole other tread you had. But did Bowies give you the best price? And why not get scope from them?

Bowie's will beat anyone for the most part and I'd rather deal with them knowing I'll get excellent service and support local business even if it DID mean paying 20 bucks more. I bought the scope at Bass Pro strictly based on having several gift cards there but Bowie didnt carry anything in the VX-1 or VX-2 line.

Makes sense. Guess deer season can't come fast enough now.

If you do it the way the benchrest shooters do, it is a major pain in the arse. It's the right way to do it, but it's also completely unnecessary IMO on a rifle that only needs to shoot minute-of-dead and not sub-minute-of-angle.

Shoot the first two bullets, but don't count em. The first one or two through a clean barrel are usually off. Other than that, I never worry about the barrel break in. I'll never shoot enough to worry about the barrel being broken in properly with my deer rifle. Pistols are another animal, since I usually shoot my .357 AT LEAST 50 times every time it comes out the safe. Usually 100 or 150. My deer rifle might shoot 200 rounds in 15 years.

All in all, that's a fine arse set-up you got. Good scope, good rifle, and the most versatile caliber there is for the lower 48. You gotta do your part and get it pointed at a good deer though
