I'm looking to buy a 16-17 ft flat boat with a 25 hp 4-stroke motor. Looking for something easy on gas and easy to handle.

What can I expect to run empty?

With an ice chest and a couple people?

Are you talking about a flats boat or a flat bottom johnboat?

Probably not very fast. That's not a lot of arse for a 17' boat. I rode in a 16' aluminum boat with 3 guys and gear last week and we struggled to get on plane, maybe doing 15mph, maybe.

I used to own a 14' flat bottom with a 25hp and with 2 guys and gear we clocked in at 30mph.

For a 16-17', I would try to find a bigger motor, maybe 30-40hp.

Not trying to highjack your thread but since on the topic of 25 hp outboards. Does anybody know if there is any place that still sells new or newer used 2 strokes in the 25 to 40 hp range. I would much rather a 2 stroke than a 4 because of speed and they seem to be easier to fix when it breaks. With that said I've been in a 16 ft. carolina skiff with a 25 hp four stroke and it was super slow. Like they said I would go with a 40.

How much speed are we talking about? I know the 4-strokes are heavier but how much?

A couple mph is like 10% slower in this case. Like the others said...get a 35 or 40 on a 16-17' boat. I have a 14' with a 25, but I wouldn't have that same motor if it was a 16' or bigger.

Only new 2 stroke that I know of (doesn't mean that there aren't others) is the Evinrude. It's 146lbs I believe vs the yamaha starting at 168lbs

I have a 16' skiff with a 50 and it will do 40 with no problem. I rarely run it full throttle because it just feels too fast.

I would assume with a 25, it would do 25-30 on smooth water.

I dont believe they make tiller handle two strokes anymore. I had a 2007 model 15hp yamaha that I sold last yr to upgrade to a 25hp. It weighed 79lbs.

Evenrude E-tech is a 2 stroke. You can get them with a tiller handle.
