Wonder why fullbacks are in the same 3 star category as kickers in all the recruiting rankings, year after year?

Wouldn't you think the recruiters would throw them a bone every once in awhile with 4 stars?

It can't be the position or the talent. These guys are as important as almost any starter on the team when they are on the field.

Maybe there's a reason if anyone knows...

Fullback is a position that is becoming obsolete and are becoming less and less valuable. You also don't need to be a superior athlete to play the position; one just needs enough size, instincts, and toughness to play the position. It is worth noting that LSU in 09 and 10 didn't have a good fullback to speak of and were anemic on offense those 2 years...then JC the Punisher came. (In no way is that the sole reason LSU was bad on offense those 2 years, just to be clear)

In other words, for LSU fullback is important, and maybe for Wisconsin, Pitt, UF, Bama, Navy....and that's about it.

This reminded me of when Les called the FB-Dive 4 times in a row to stampley

I like their blocking and watching these rhinos smash the d when carrying the ball.

To an extent, yes. College has changed way faster than the NFL game has, but there is more passing in the NFL then there ever has. Fullback is more valuable in the NFL than college, but still isn't as valuable of a position as it was even 5-7 years ago. You might not see fullbacks hardly at all in the game of football in 20 or 30 years at the rate offenses are changing. Who knows, maybe smashmouth football may come back in a cyclical fashion to be the main form of offense again but I doubt it for the most part.

Teams that do utilize a power running game with a fullback are at more of an advantage now than ever since defenses are built to stop spread offenses nowadays. Fwiw, I hope the fullback position never dies!

When Quinn johnson left and Stampley took over... there was a noticeable dip in the running game.

After watching Swanson's highlights, I've been wondering if he wouldn't make a good linebacker? He seems to have quickness and athleticism. I think Chavis should take a look at him there, and if he looks good, Miles can go after a FB in next year's class. Just a thought.

Middle LB... I agree. He could still practice for both positions if he has that kind of versatility, but if he were really good at MLB, only play FB if Copeland were injured. (I'm not sure who's behind Copeland now, so all this speculation for the fun of it. I trust he coaches.)

Just an observation: LSU, Bama, UF, and Wisc are in the top 10 almost every year, with multiple NC's. THAT's ABOUT IT!
