Tomas Vokoun to Pens (and how it could affect rest of NHL)

For the 5 hockey fans on here...
Extremely interesting move today, Tomas Vokoun (expiring contract) was traded for a 7th round pick today to Pittsburgh, a deal which no one saw coming. Vokoun proceeded to sign a two-year, $4 million contract with the Pens. The Pens are acting like it's nothing more than wanting to have a great backup to give them more opportunities to give MAF rest during the season, but:
1) That's a lot of money for a backup goalie, under any circumstance.
2) That's a lot of money for a backup goalie when you don't know if you'll have enough $$ to re-sign Stall after next year.
3) As we all know, MAF absolutely stunk up the joint these playoffs.
4) It seems odd that a goalie of Vokoun's caliber and prestige would tolerate heading to a place where he could be nothing more than a backup, without at the very least posing a significant challenge to the starting job.
Obviously, it will be interesting to see what happens there. But even more interesting is what could happen for the rest of the league. Vokoun signing with Pitt takes one more goalie off the market, which is a big deal after Thomas' recent "retirement" (rumors about either Thomas/Rask being traded by Boston obviously aren't true now). This just increases the pressure on franchises like Edmonton, Columbus and Toronto who are in desperate need of goaltending to hit this offseason. Toronto is already rumored to be going heavily after Luongo. And then the fewer numbers available could mean a higher price in the free agent market, even with an uncertain CBA. It should be interesting to see how it plays out.

He shredded his groin last season, I don't see him being anything more than a back up this season, but if he can regain form he'll be a great signing for them. I don't consider him a bust for the Caps, sucked he got injured, but things happen .

That is one thing I am not worried about with the Dallas Stars.
Lehtenon looks to be healthy. Plus they have Jack Campbell in the minors (one of the top goalie prospects).
Goalies are always a hot commodity in the NHL. They are like a pitcher or a Qb or PG. A team is going to always have to overpay to get even a backup.
But it does seem like there is a thinning of elite goalies right now in the NHL which will drive them to insane prices.

He's an average to decent backup

You're high. He was a top 10 goalie going into last season.

He's closer to an average to decent starter (with the injury) than he is to an average to decent backup (in fact, I'd say it's likely that's what he'd be, if not a good starter).
On a side note, if anybody wants to start a game thread, go ahead.

Not quite yet. That was a really good thread though last year.

7th round pick is fricking cheap

It was probably in large part for two reasons. One is because Vokoun had a no-movement clause, so there wasn't going to be a bidding war or anything like that. Second, there's always a risk to give up big assets for a guy who may not sign with you. For example, last year James Wisniewski signed the largest contract in the entire league on the first day of free agency with the Blue Jackets (6 yr/$33 mill) after the CBJ traded for his rights a few days before, but we only gave up a 5th round pick to be able to talk to him early, even though he would have went for much more if he was signed. But you're not going to give up a high draft pick/prospect for a guy who could potentially elect to not play for you.
