Thats crazy for a shortstop!

And LSUs .981 fielding percentage is outstanding!

Pitching and Def have been the big difference this year. Don't need to have a great offense to dominate these days.

Yea I can't remember ever a SS at LSU better than NOLA. He is a defensive machine

He will be the player we miss most next year and it's not even close.

While I agree he is a stud we are losing an 11 win pitcher...

The defense has definitely gotten better, I don't know what our fielding percentage was in the past but we made way too many errors the last few years

KG will be missed but lil nola looks like he can step right in to the friday night role next year. Nola's defense and clutch hitting will not be replaced next year.

It will be tough to lose them both. I am a huge Nola fan. Anyone who does the little things right gets my praise.

We have definitely been spoiled by his consistent play since he has been here. Unless we have a really good incoming freshman to take his place, we will miss him more than Gausman IMO.

I agree. I'm really going miss this kid play. He has truly made some amazing/exciting plays. He has certainly been on his game this weekend. Austin Nola

I agree that he has been a great shortstop and one of the most valuable players on this year's team. What I can't figure out is how he did not earn first- or second-team all-SEC status.

In particular, I do not understand the Nolan Fontana fetish that, I believe, resulted in him finishing ahead of Nola on the second-team all-SEC team. Compare the following:

Nola Fontana
Batting Average .317 .290
Doubles 16 10
Homeruns 4 9
RBI 42 29
Slugging .462 .464
On-base pct. .434 .411
Errors 5 6
Fielding Pct. .979 .976

OK, Nola had a higher batting average, more RBIs, a higher on-base percentage, slightly fewer errors, and a slightly better fielding percentage. Fontana hit more homeruns but got substantially fewer RBIs out of it.

Fontana is a fine player but I take Nola's performance this year over Fontana's. I also find it interesting that the MLB.com lists Fontana as a top-100 prospect but makes no mention of Nola. My sense is that Fontana came in as a highly-regarded freshman and had a respectable (but not spectacular) career at Florida. This year Nola outperformed him.
