I've heard a lot in the last few months about Payton's arrogance and how he treaded the media.

Does anyone have proof(videos) that he mis-treated the media or is is just hearsey? I've watched a lot of his press conferences in the past and never noticed it myself. Not anything out of the ordinary in what other coaches tell the media. Just wondering if I missed something since the media has been piling on him the last few months.

Does Nick Saban "mistreat" the media? They are similar type coaches when it comes to the media.

Just heresy. He's an all pro in coachspeak. He can ramble for a couple of minutes in response to a question and never give any new info. Some coaches are just more close to the vest with the media than others. A perfect example is concerning injuries. There have been plenty of complaints about the team not being forthcoming. When Brees injured his knee he was still not on the injury report. That got enough traction that the league came down on them. What did they do in response? They started putting out an unusually lengthy injury report. If a player had a sore muscle he was listed. It's rarely specific in detail either. Listen at the start of pressers when Payton lists them. It'll be something like "Moore has a leg, Vilma still has a knee,... etc".

It is good gamesmanship and all within the rules- just not something that endears you to the press. This is prolly a factor in how hard some ran with bountygate portraying the organization negatively.

There have been many reports by media, mostly local, that they got nasty calls from Payton after a press conference or an interview berating them.

The media hates his guts for a reason, and I'm sure its probably true that he has treated some of them like dirt. The media is mostly made up of lazy idiots, so I don't blame him.

I never said he mis-treated the media. There a lot of reports on this board saying that and I can't see it.

Seems like some of the stuff mentioned is kind of petty and nothing that can be seen on camera.

Its not just one or two guys. A bunch of media members have said that he has called them to berate them, called their bosses, etc. And its not just Wilkerson and Freeman. Its probably true.

I seem to recall an incident with Brian Allee Walsh. Didn't they pull his Saints credentials along with everyone else from neworleans.com?

There have been other reports that Payton, like many other coaches, is a control freak with the media and wants to have as much control as possible over what information is reported (no big deal really).

I can tell you that I'm friendly with a former sports anchor at Fox 8. He did tell me that Payton was notorious for calling up reporters on the phone, cursing them out and threatening them if he didn't like something that was said about him or his team.

My attitude as a life long Saints fan has always been he may be a jerk, but if so he's our jerk. After years of losing, as a fan I can take it.

The man has a free pass with 99.99% of fans. Rightly so. He can do whatever the hell he wants in my book.

He could boot a female reporter in the skull and I'd be like "She obviously provoked him."

He's priceless to the Saints and the fans.

frick the media! They sit there and print anything they want with just the slimest shred of facts or evidence with what seems like zero accountability and when someone calls them out on it they want to whine and cry. Good job CSP for calling them up to say "Hey, What the frick"!

CORRECT! They don't have a "media" source following them around, so there should be some sort of checks and balances on how they report. I assume a lot of the so called media friendly coaches wish they had the nerve to tell a few of them off. Especially since the media is the first ones to say when or if a coach should be on the "hot seat" and all that stuff.

Correct. In fact, the word you used was treaded.

If I was a coach, I think I would have to be a smartass to them too like Parcells was. THey ask the dumbest questions.
