Hello all, I'm new to TD but have lurked for some time. I've grown up fishing SE LA and have a camp and boat in Venice where fish inshore, offshore, and duck hunt. However, I recently had to move to Houston for work so I brought along my 17' flatboat and was wondering if anyone here with any experience in the area could point me in the right direction for any activities I could reasonably do in my little boat be it freshwater, inshore saltwater, flats, crabbing, whatever. Nothing specific, just areas to start with, I'm sure I can figure out the rest. Looking at maps, it seems like most areas near Houston are mostly large bays which I'd prefer to not traverse in a flat bottom boat, especially since the wife will likely be in tow.

Anything I need to know about local regs besides size and creel restrictions? Any help is appreciated... Looking forward to becoming more active on the board...

Well first thing you need to do is forget everything you liked about fishing in south east la. Limits are hard to come by in the Galvston Bay area nothing like Venice.
And the limits are pretty tight 10 trout and 2 reds.

I freshwater fish and mainly fish a small lake west of Houston called Fayette. About the best bass lake you will find.

Conroe is another options just can get crazy in warmer weather with all the pleasure boaters and jet skis flying around. But Conroe does hold fish, good bass, excellent catfish (if that's your thing), and also excellent sac-a-lait fishing.

Be prepared for quite the learning curve when it comes to fishing around Houston.

Welcome
Don't know shite about south Texas but if you bass fish you need to make a trip to Sam Rayburn.
Also got a buddy that lives on Conroe that has told me the best time to fish there is at night.

Texas Tiger, freshwater is fine by me. I'd be happy breaking out the fly rod and ultralites for bluegill and such if the action is even remotely decent. Can you fish jugs in Texas lakes for catfish?

I'm perfectly aware that my 100 trout and 10 tuna days are over unless I head back to the camp. Its just too far to consistently make weekend trips just to fish.

How far is Fayette from, say, the Heights?

It is awful kind of you to offer the camp to the OB while you are away for work as a jester for acceptance in our ranks...

Welcome.

Can't tell you much about fishing in Texas.

There's a online forum called "2coolfishing" for Texas outdoors stuff. It's pretty informative.

Go down and fish the smaller bays off of clear lake. Particularly the developed area with piers and docks are productive especially at night in the summertime. Look between NASA Pkwy and Red Bluff Rd. off of 146 near seabrook. Flounder, reds, occasional specs, etc... congregate around the lights.

Yessir it is. She's awesome. The picture is old, she is 17 weeks old now.

ETA: If you're in the heights, I would try Lake Houston. Vastly underrated bass lake, and has good pop of sacs and white bass too.

Were in the same boat Geaux, (no pun intended) we moved to the Houston area about a year and a half ago. Just bought a boat (last weekend) and will be mainly fishing Lake Houston. A decent website I ran across was lakehoustonfishing.com. They have a few people that give out some pretty decent advice it appears.

You can jug for catfish here, there are just some pretty specific rules about it. White Jugs only (which i'm partial to anyhow - ) Your name and a bunch of other info has to be listed on the jug. Allowed up to 5 hooks per jug I think. No limb lines.
