Another What Might Have Been

This is all fantasy but nothing much is going on right now so what the frick.
Had Chandler not been traded, we clearly were solid at the 1, 4 and 5. We had a couple of good bench players. But what could the Hornets realistically have done about the 2 and 3 and in other ways to build upon that team. Peja's contract was a killer, although he did win a few games for us. As we have repeated ad nauseum the Posey signing was awful.
I would like some knowledgeable personnel and salary cap posters to give their input. What alternative course could it have pursued. Clearly, keeping Chandler was one thing. But what else was realistic?

first of all we should have traded our two picks in 06 (drafted were Hilton Armstrong, and Cedric Simmons) to houston to draft Rudy Gay, and drafted Paul Milsap instead of Marcus Vinicius. in 07 drafted Nick Young instead of JuJu

Do I know you ?
I have been preaching this for 6 years now. Rudy is my favorite non Hornets player. Loved him ever since LSU and UConn played in 06.
Houston traded the 8th pick (Gay) to Memphis for Battier. Not sure if we could have gotten him but I hope the thought at least crossed the Walrus' mind. The most talented (not best, LA and Roy) player in the draft falls to 8 and it's a position of need.

Let's say the Chandler trade goes through and Wilcox and Smith become Hornets and then are UFAs. The Hornets, after the Chandler deal, would have had some flexibility for a few signings.
I'm lazy and haven't really looked into salaries etc, but between Paul/West/Peja the Hornets had $35 million locked in for 09-10. Add MoPete/Posey for another $12 and we're at $47. The cap that year was $57. The Songaila trade was $4 and JuJu was $2. That's about $53 million.
Sign Channing Frye to play C. Not a great defensive presence, but he can shoot 3s and signed a 2 year, $4 million deal that summer with Phoenix. Barnes was another UFA that off season. He signed with Orlando for about $1.5 million and would have been a good backup 3/spot starter. That's $3 of the 4 million available and probably means one or the other to fit in the draft pick. I go with the C.
Instead of Collison, draft either Taj Gibson for more frontcourt help or Beaubois to be a new Pargo.
Still trade into the 2nd and get Budinger instead of Thornton to be a back up 3 who can shoot.
Paul/Beaubois
Peterson/Beaubois/Budinger
Peja/Posey/Budinger
West/Gibson/Posey
Frye/Gray
Fill out the roster with minimum scrubs. Run a more up tempo offense because they don't have the horses to grind it out. Still a flawed team, but Gibson, Budinger, and Frye proved to be capable role players.
But realistically, Bower cornered the team with awful front office decisions. Only a Cuban type owner could have gotten them out of this mess.
The best plan (basketball wise- not from a PR) may have been to have a firesale on both Paul and West once that trio was breaking up. Package Peja/Posey/Peterson contracts in those deals and hoard picks/young players.

It's not hindsight at all. Gay was a top recruit out of HS and was a top prospect. Watching him go at 8 with the talent he has and knowing we had the ammunition to move up to get him was frustrating to me. Especially with the players we played at the wing positions in the years to come. DT Brown, Mo Pete, Sual Bop, Posey, Peja.

What about when he said we should've drafted Paul Millsap who went in the 2nd round?
Obviously this is a hindsight kind of thread but still I doubt people were saying back then that we should've done all of that stuff. I can understand the part about Gay though
