Look at the aftermath of the rebellion that inspired that painting turned out in the end.

Ever had to move a REALLY heavy trunk or chest / box?
You sometimes have to move one side as far forward as possible. Then, go to the other side and move it as far as you can. Then, keep swapping sides as you "walk" it forward.
THAT is how I feel about the two "sides" of U.S. politics.
'We the people' are inside a giant chest. Ahead is a deep, sheer cliff. Each "team" gets to move its side forward (TOWARD THE VERY SAME CLIFF!!) until it is as far as that team can go. DEMS move the LEFT toward the cliff. REPs move the RIGHT toward the cliff. "WE" a-holes are, nevertheless, still about to go over the cliff in either case.

What is the number of French Republics since that artwork? The first republic(the cause of that image) in a scant few years gave way to Bonaparte and shiloads of fun.
