| Roger Goodell is going to end up hurting the NFL (Posted on 5/2/12 at 12:00 pm)
I know he wants to "protect" players from injuries and what not. But it seems to me he mostly wants to protect the league from getting sued. What pisses me off is these guys are playing football, do they really think they can do all this shite to their bodies and walk away perfectly fine, it's ridiculous. Pretty soon every big hit is going to be a suspension, it's bull shite. Now players are suspended for a coaches program, of course they are going to listen to their coach I mean what the frick. Yes I mad

Then this stupid bitch on SportsCenter talking to Bobby Hebert just brought up all the malicious hits on Brett Favre in the NFC, NONE of which were even flagged or fined; should we have just stopped when we got close to him?

I feel like all this crap is going to affect a lot more than just the Saints in the long run

Yeah it sucks, but there are more NFL fans that want to see tons of points scored and watch QBs rack up passing yards than there are people who want to see hard-nosed defense and tough, low-scoring games. Whatever more people want to see is what the NFL is going to shift their league towards because that equals more viewers which equals more money. You couple that with how much the ubiquitous use of instant replay has taken the spontaneity and excitement out of the game (in both NFL and college ball) and I just can't get pumped up about watching football like I used to.

Right. Because in no other industry do employees take on assumed risk of injury thus disallowing them from suing.

that's what he's most worried about IMO that's not entirely a bad thing tho - huge lawsuits are about the only thing that could derail the NFL at this point

Very good point. Fantasy football feeds this mentality.

Your also going to see more and more retired players with brain disorerds and such. Big stories that shock fans, therefore losing more and more future athletes. The NFL will need a clean record for a few decades to reverse what a couple huge articles or stories do to the league. I dont think Goodell is as bad as we think, but when it comes to the Saints he is.

In my biased opinion, there were 2 or 3 plays by Bobby McCray that should have been personal fouls. In fact, the NFL sent Minnesota an apology letter for missing those calls the Wednesday after the game. I am glad that the Vikings got those apologies from the league. That really makes up for it.

And you are entitled to your opinion, but the fact is Favre was injured and couldn't get out of the way of those hits bc of his ankle. Any other team would have hit him just as hard; were those hits vicious, yes, illegal, no

If it was all about safety it would be a flag for a qb to throw a ball to high leavin his WR defenseless. I know it's retard logic

Agreed. Same reason attendance is down across all major sports. Fantasy sports and the availability of games on TV and the internet (not to mention the advent of massive HD televisions, the down economy and the general fecklessness of Americans) is the new norm with sports consumption.

Must of those are football hits, everyone who ever played football wants to hit a quarterback. Making an offense uncomfortable is the best way to play d. See 1/9/2012

I don't think so many people around here would have any problem with the suspensions if it were happening to Green Bay or Atlanta. I think the whole thing is overblown anyway but the league is going to do what it has to do to protect its own interest. Goodell is protecting the owners which is his boss. Just doing his job.

Their employers also take measures to prevent long-term serious injuries from occurring to their employees and are still liable for lawsuits. These rules have been on the books for awhile, but now they are actually applying them. Good. Anyone can light someone up with a cheapshot after they caught the ball to jar it lose but do you have the skill to follow that receiver and slap it away or knock it out of their hands? Make it about the skill and not the cheapshots. You can wrap someone up with a good tackle while still bringing the pain. John Lynch did for over a dozen years. Ray Lewis has for over 15 years. It can be done, but you have fake tough guys who can only take big cheapshots like James Harrison who only want to take cheapshots and piss and moan and threaten to take their balll home if they can't do it their way because "that's how they learned to play the game". Bull shite. How about you learn to be something more than a athletic freak?

I'm still waiting to see the list of players who were knocked out for the season, or had their careers ended by this Saint defense that was the most disgustingly cheap-shot taking team in NFL history. I'd settle for the list showing that the Saints were the most penalized team for late and unnecessary hits.

that's all this is about. the NFL doen't give a crap about the players, they are protecting themselves from lawsuit after lawsuit from former players.

Eh, McCray was a fricking cunt the whole game. He was hitting him after the throw multiple times.
