I know we have quite a few consumer tech followers on the board, so I wanted to pose this question. Over the past few years, companies have had the opportunity to shape their presence in the smartphone arena. This primarily has occurred around the Android platform with Windows looking forward growth in the coming years (playing catch-up).

Who do you consider the leaders in the smartphone arena, excluding the obvious choice of Apple?

My list (in order):
HTC -- Always are the forefront of the market. The EVO 4G was literally years ahead of the competition and the HTC One X makes a similar statement. Sense UI is considered by most to be the best-in-class UI for Android.

Samsung -- Really become the biggest Apple competitor by leveraging great marketing and best-in-class screen quality that truly resonates with the average phone buyer. While Samsung has been slow in supporting its phones and is experiencing fragmentation issues, the company continues to create industry leading phone capabilities.

Motorola -- Started off as the market leader for Android, but has since found itself searching for ways to reinvent phones that surpass its original "DROID" lineup. Typically make high quality phones with good branding but are often missing the "it" factor. Outside of the Atrix, Motorola has rarely produced a phone with cutting edge features. It creates a strong offering, but does not push the cutting edge as often I would like.

LG -- Strong screen quality and seems to be finding a place in the mid-tier price range. Appears to be in Samsung's shadow -- very similar looking product offerings, but it has not reached the cutting edge strategy to jump Samsung. LG has made a strong movement into Android though in recent years and you can only imagine that this will continue into the coming years.

Notable mentions:
Acer -- making noise in tablet space
Huawei -- potential growth player in android; especially the cheaper markets
ASUS -- strong movements in tablet space

Interested in everyone else's opinions. I may have missed a company or two, but I think these are the big boys.

HTC - haven't they been in some financial trouble recently? The One X is a great device though and should bring the company back at the front of the Android game. I'm glad they decided to price it at the standard $199 price and not $249 or $299 like some other high end devices. I am looking at you Samsung. Anyway it is amazing what a relatively young Taiwanese company has been able to achieve in a short period with only ~4000 employees and go toe to toe with the big boys.

Nokia - though it might be premature to add them to your list, I believe they have a winner on their hands with the new Windows Phone OS running Nokia Lumia 900. The wife got one recently. It is a great device and Windows Phone 7.5 OS is legit. When WP 8 (Apollo) comes out later this year, the Windows Phones should get some real traction in the market.

They tried to revolutionize the tablet/phone market with the Padfone but no carriers would have it.

My pick is Samsung. Their hardware is high quality and they seem to have a drive for innovation, demonstrating flexible LCD screens, shipping phones with projectors, and soon releasing the quad core Galaxy S3. They're competing with Apple by moving ahead technologically instead of just mimicry.

htc made a quality phone with the One X, but I feel like they're leaving some of their market behind by dripping physical keyboards.
