GoT 2.3 "What Is Dead May Never Die" (Book Readers)

“It’s a game to you, isn’t it. It won’t last because they are the knights of summer and winter is coming.”

– Catelyn Stark

Preview from Westeros.org

quote:

After two episodes full of reintroductions and some weaknesses in terms of pacing and structure, the third episode definitely starts to deliver.

However, we’re not quite done with the reintroductions—or the introductions, for that matter—as this episode finally lets us catch up with yet another claimant to the throne, King Renly Baratheon. Perhaps surprisingly, all considered, he has found himself a wife since we last saw him. In this episode, he also finds himself a new member of his Kingsguard. But none of this is impressing Catelyn who has been sent to treat with him on behalf of her son, Robb.

It is starting to become very obvious that there are far too many kings in Westeros. Another can be found on Pyke, where Balon Greyjoy is making battle plans that place Theon in a very difficult position. His ultimate decision leads to our favourite scene of the episode, featuring both some excellent visuals and some great scoring.

In King’s Landing, Tyrion gets an opportunity to show his brilliance as he takes on all three of the major schemers at the court—Maester Pycelle, Varys and Littlefinger—in order to learn who the least trustworthy (or perhaps most untrustworthy is more accurate) of them is, at least in a particular sense. He also finds a solution for Shae’s boredom at being hidden away inside his chambers, though it does not appear to greatly please either her or poor Sansa.

Further north, Jon learns an uncomfortable truth to go with the headache that Craster gave him last week and in Winterfell Bran tries to get Maester Luwin to believe him when he talks about seeing things through Summer’s eyes. His sister Arya, meanwhile, finds her journey northwards interrupted as the king’s orders catches up with Yoren and his band of recruits.

quote:

In this week’s episode, written by Bryan Cogman and directed by Alik Sakharov, we see the fallout from Jon Snow’s following of Craster in the woods beyond the Wall. Arya and the Night’s Watch recruits run into trouble on the road north, while Tyrion accumulates power in King’s Landing. Theon struggles in the Iron Islands as his family questions his true alliance. Renly Baratheon and his youthful court take the stage, and Catelyn Stark arrives to treat with the self-proclaimed king.

Ours is the Fury: What are you looking forward to this week? Like most people, I can’t wait to see Brienne in action. I’m also very curious about Natalie Dormer’s portrayal of Margaery Tyrell.

I was worried they would hardly show this plot thread, and just gloss over it. But this particular POV is a very good one in this novel, high tension, and action.

Ugh, not liking this since it is not canon. Don't know why they had to include this since we found out about the male children offered up to the Night Walkers another way, and also the shite hitting the fan at Crasters Keep was due to something else, not Jon.

Me as well. This girl is hot, and I can't wait to see her naked when she has to consummate the marriage.

After that part of Arya's POV, hers are painfully boring until SOS.

I dont know if I ever thought of her POV as boring...

It got slower for sure but I think I have enjoyed every arya chapter.

Not as much as tyrion or jon but she comes in close

She was actually my favorite POV in AFFC but only because it was a first hand witness account of littlefinger's scheming

I'm drawing a blank as to how you could possibly find the Ghost in Harrenhall parts of ACOK with Arya where she is using Jaquen as her own personal assassin boring. Or for that matter when she, Gendry, and Hot Pie bust out of the castle.

Yeah, you'll have 4-5 Arya chapters at least, the last couple being really cool.

the ghost thing to me was horribly frustrating as she could made such a huge difference yet opted for immediate relief.

I can understand that, but there is a pretty huge difference between frustrating and boring. But that whole sequence was pretty realistic, she is just a kid, not a long term planner. Though she does get smacked in the face with the realization that she screwed up not reaching higher.

You know nothing NIH.

Arya is one of my favorites. Love the actress they casted to play her. I can't help but feel like a Gendry/Arya alliance is being set up for future books (I'm about 600 pages into ADwD so I could be wrong). Especially given his lineage and hers.

I don't think Gendry was in ADwD but I could be misremembering.

I believe the last we saw of him was when he killed Biter when he was attacking Brienne.

I was speaking more of the books yet to be published.

Only fifteen minutes!

This episode is going to be by far the best so far this season.

I'm getting tired of HBO screwing us out of a good 5+ minutes of show between other series previews and recaps from the last episode.
