Madness had at least 1 top 10 hit in the US By contrast The Move -- one of the best British bands of their era -- were hugely popular in the UK but never did jack in the States If we count limited US success then I would nominate Roxy Music, who were one of the biggest and best bands of the early to mid 1970s, but had only one single scrape the US top 30.

They were great. I think both Siren and Avalon had two singles each in the US. I don't think Pulp was popular in the US, neither was Placebo, nor another band of Roxy Music like weight or relevance, The Jesus and Mary Chain.

Cliff Richard and the Shadows Had a few minor chart flirtations in the U.S. but nothing to get wild over. He is a legend in the U.K. LINK

Over a 53-year career, Richard has become a fixture of the British entertainment world, amassing many gold and platinum discs and awards, including three Brit awards and two Ivor Novello awards. He has had more than 130 singles, albums and EPs make the UK Top 20, more than any other artist[4] and holds the record (with Elvis Presley) as the only act to make the UK singles charts in all of its first six decades (1950s–2000s). He has achieved 14 UK No. 1 singles (or 18, depending on the counting methodology) and is the only singer to have had a No. 1 single in the UK in six consecutive decades: the 1950s through to the 2000s (discounting digital downloads and counting only CDs, he also had a UK No. 1 single in the 2000s). Richard is the biggest selling singles artist of all time in the UK, with total sales of over 21 million[5] and has reportedly sold an estimated 250 million records worldwide.[6][7]
Yeah, I remember that one but that's one in 53 years ! Pales in comparison with what he accomplished in England.

Suede The jam Libertines The kinks are hugely underrated in the USA due to not being able to tour here for several years after their first album.

Was going to mention Cocteau Twins, but they're Scottish. Talk about a band that's hit the charts over there but is little known in the States.

What about american bands who had more success in the UK? While it is certainly no longer the case for the longest time Kings Of Leon were huge in the UK and virtually unknown in the US

People forget/don't realize but during their glory years the Ramones were all but totally ignored by US radio and, ergo, the US record-buying public. A '70s American band called Sparks had virtually no success in the US but were so popular in the UK they eventually moved there. Some people consider them to have been a huge influence on/ripped off by Queen (if that's your idea of a good thing). Eva Cassidy was almost totally unknown when her album Songbird went to #1 in the UK in 1998, two years after her death.

As always, I'm going to knight for The Kaiser Chiefs. They are a contemporary act. I'm really surprised they haven't blown up here. Playing their best single "Ruby" before about 50,000 at Elland Road stadium in Leeds, England. They have a special knack for getting their crowds jumping. I'd love to see them live. They were in Houston a few weeks ago, but it was on a damn Wednesday, or I would have been there.
