I have a 18.5 ft. BayStealth with a 115 on the back. Bought it used, but it's in good shape.
Did all the things needed to make sure the gas, oil, carbeurator, and jets were in sync.....took it to local mechanic (greenwell springs marine in baton rouge).

However, the problem I'm having is getting the boat to plane out once I try to accelerate, or im having problems with my hole shot.

My idle is fine, and if I have someone in the boat and make them go up to the very front, it'll eventually start to plane out and will get up to 45-47 mph.

Now, I'm used to driving go-devils, so am I doing something wrong? I've gathered from many outboard users that you have to trim it down all the way before takin off, but it seems like there could be more to it.

Any answers is greatly appreciated.

what is the power curve range RPM on your boat?

What RPM do you turn at WOT?

You may be propped wrong

A must. If you're doing this and having trouble, you have too much pitch in your prop. What RPMs are you running at top speed?

When I'm trying to take off, it starts chuggin water and the rpm's sit between 3500-3700. But when it finally planes out, it gets to 5200-5500 rpm's.

OK, I don't agree with this at all. Too much pitch does not result in too much speed. Now, he may have too much pitch. If so, his top end will not change that much with a lower pitch prop. It will just be easier to get there.

I am going through this now. You need a new prop, not an adjustment. Let's say you're running a 21 like I am. You'll need to drop down to a 19, like I am about to do.

There's a joke in this title somewhere but I'll let someone a little more witty than myself come up with it.

I was thinkin the same thing, but I figured if the previous owner, who fished a ton, ran with the same prop, why wouldnt he have changed it?

It propbably worked ok. Make sure you're trimmed as far down as possible on every hole shot. If no improvement, you'll need to drop down at least 2 inches.

we had the same problem with our NS with a 115, we changed the prob and it helped some, but the best solution i found was to just work the throttle up more slowly...if i go WOT from a stop it takes forever to get up on plane

Well Before buying a new prop you may want to take the plugs out of the one you currently have and see if that helps. But if you do need a different prop you may also want to consider a 4 blade prop.

First things coming to mind is prop is too big or you need new spark plugs. I had a similar problemt until I replaced plugs (believe it or not).

He may not have them. My Power Tech does not. Isn't that only Merc?

You are trimming down all the way before you take off correct if so then prop plugs, prop size, all kinds of things could be in place!

Did you test drive the boat before buying used and if so did it get on plane quick then if not you should have...
