| Can you call yourself a music fan if (Posted on 4/11/12 at 6:36 pm)
You just follow the current pop music trends? Or does it take a deeper knowledge, respect and taste in various kinds of music to actually call yourself a music fan?

I think anybody who "listens" to music can be called a music fan, even if they only listen to shitty music.

I'm not trying to get into a debate about what is good music. Is someone who just follows pop music trends a true fan of music or just a fan of pop culture?

I think you can call yourself a fan... if thats all you like... I think what myself and many others like yourself do, transcends normal fandom...

Interesting question that I ponder sometimes. I would think that someone who was enthusiastic towards music would try to branch out as much as possible. As for myself, I listen to a lot of older artists, but I make sure I have whatever new record that comes out that seems to be worth my time. But even then, I don't listen to a lot of the new pop music that comes out. I just find it too uninteresting even when compared with pop music of the past. Now, the reason why I think about this is that I think some people get enthusiasm for music confused with enthusiasm for other things, whether they be material or sexual. Some listen to rappers cause they like bling, some listen to the latest boy groups because they like.. well, you know. I have a cousin that listens to these awful pretty boy rock bands now but almost nothing else. She might just see something in them that I don't and legitimately hates all other kinds of music. It might be just me starting to get older to the point where I don't understand young people. Sometimes I think if you were really a true music fan, you'd horde as much of it as you can get. I have a ludicrous amount of music across multiple genres (even pop music but not as much recent stuff) just because I can't stop myself from trying to find new music that I like. I'm not making a definitive statement one way or another, it's just that I think about this every now and then.

This is what I believe is the definition of a music fan. A person with a never ceasing need to constantly find new music. Be it music of today or the past, rock, blues, hip hop, jazz etc. A willingness to cross musical boundaries and social lines to find enjoyable music that you have never heard before. I don't generally find those qualities in people whose radios stay on top 40 rock/country/pop stations. but like the poster above stated maybe those qualities are found in people who exceed fandom

I'd call them fans. There are also junkies and snobs, though. Glad to see the music board brought out some junkies and snobs. Love seeing music I'm not familiar with and talking about the bands that are less known up and comers.

Yeah, I think that's the important distinction. The casual versus the obsessive. I'm the junkie/snob hybrid for sure.

It's not true music to me. No instruments. Voice corrections ott da arse. Notice how quickly they fade. Then look at other music. King George for example. Still goin strong.

Music is music. It's an "art". No one should have to explain why they skip a track or turn up the volume. Doesn't matter why you enjoy a certain sound. Imo, its just as bad to like a band bc its popular as it is to dislike a band bc its popular.

Has no bearing on the definition of music. A computer can be just as powerful of an instrument as a guitar. This thread isn't about what you consider good music its a discussion on what fandom is.

You're completely missing the point of this thread. I am not talking down to pop music fans I am attempting to have a discussion on what it takes to be considered a fan. I consider the never ending search for new and personally pleasing music to be a criteria. Most (not all) pop fans do not participate in that search. That is why they were used as an example

I just got done listening to it for the first time. It's pretty consistent - if you like one or two of their songs, you'll likely like the whole thing. I definitely see it growing on me.
