| How many career pitching wins will get you into the HOF? (Posted on 4/8/12 at 11:30 am)
300 used to be the number, but today with pitchers making fewer starts and throwing fewer innings, what do you guys feel is the new number of wins to get a pitcher into the MLB Hall of Fame? My guess is 240 career wins borderline, 250 should be in, 260+ and you're in for sure.

It's still 300. If 250 is the new benchmark, Jamie Moyer will be in the HOF. Moyer's a good pitcher but not anywhere near HOF caliber.

I'm referring to guys currently pitching in their prime and have been in the majors since 2000

Their managers and pitching coaches make the call on that NOT the starting pitchers. Just look at the decreases in the number of complete games and shutouts over the past 20 years.

They can't just stop putting pitchers in the Hall forever can they? Obviously, they can, but they won't.

Today's pitchers won't get measured by wins, a team stat. Sabremetrics will increasingly affect HOF voting.

Wins are one of the worse numbers to look at for pitchers, imo.

Exactly! Hell, look how many AJ Burnette won with the Stankees last year.

Wins also mean you were consistent over a period of time if you average 15 wins per year over 15 years. That's 225 wins there and with a year or two more they get to 250 and that's HOF worthy IMO.

number of wins is not enough if you are talking 250 or thereabouts. you have to be a top pitcher for part of your career. a Cy Young, lead the league in ERA a couple of times. SOMETHING other than being in the league for 20 years. For example, Tim Lincicum just went back to his old delivery, because he was getting shelled with his new one. WIth his old delivery, his career is going to end with an injury, and damn soon. Thus, he will be premier, but not long. He could win one or two more Cy Youngs before he is washed up. So... in this scenario, you have some guy with maybe 150 wins, and two or three Cy Young's and two World Series rings and a World Series MVP or two. Does he get in?

Why do you think he will get injured? His mechanics are different, but they are not causing arm trouble to date. I would be more concerned about declining velocity and him just simply be a less effective pitcher.

No one gets in based on the number of wins unless it is 300. Tommy John has 288 and he's not in. Juan Marichal has 243 and he's in.

Wins are only one factor. Let's say a pitcher has these stats: 158 wins - 13 losses 1.01 ERA 2.3 strikeouts per inning World series record of 8-0 Ends his career early due to arm injury. He's going to the Hall.

Sandy Koufax only went 165-87 with an ERA of 2.76.

Koufax was WAY before my time. The best lefties in my lifetime are Randy Johnson and Tom Glavine.
