Metro Council Meeting at 3:00 PM Wednesday on Food Trucks (UPDATED)

Being blasted by all the food trucks this morning.
This afternoon at 3pm, the Metro Council's Finance and Executive Committee will hear an ordinance proposed by Councilman Smokie Bourgeois aimed at regulating food trucks in Baton Rouge.
There are two main regulations being proposed. One requires food trucks to not open their serving windows to oncoming traffic (and to follow the same traffic rules as ordinary vehicles).
The other requires food ...trucks to have written permission to park on privately owned lots after business hours if a business is operating in that location... see page 2, item 13 https://brgov.com/dept/council/agendas/f&e.pdf
These are all rules that most if not all food trucks in Baton Rouge already follow. No food truck owners want to endanger the lives of citizens while they wait for food, nor is it in the best interests for operators of a young, start-up business to park on a private lot of an established Baton Rouge business without the knowledge of the lot's owner. That's just bad business. And rules are already in place to discourage trespassing onto private business lots. Do we want to make our already overworked City Police officers responsible for enforcing something that isn't a widespread problem and is already on the books via other rules and regulations?
So what is the purpose of these regulations? You tell us. Are they in the interest of public safety, or are they meant to form a basis for further regulations that are unnecessary and unwarranted (regulation for the sake of regulation)? We leave that to the opinion of the public.
Baton Rouge has quickly become a food truck town, and food trucks are quickly becoming synonymous with a progressive and entrepreneurial Baton Rouge. The rest of the country has begun taking notice too - our trucks have been featured on TV shows, web series, and documentaries that have aired across the United States and Canada, putting Baton Rouge on the map any chance we can.
We ARE entrepreneurs... small business owners... your next door neighbors... and fellow citizens dedicated to making Baton Rouge as great a city as we can. We talk constantly about cities that we aspire to become more like. Portland, Austin... these are cities with thriving food truck cultures, and they are just a small part of what has made those cities great - but they are also a key driver to help make Baton Rouge a great city too.
Support your food trucks - SHARE this post, EMAIL your council member today in SUPPORT of food trucks ( https://www.brgov.com/dept/council/), and if you are able to do so, attend the F&E committee meeting THIS AFTERNOON at 3pm at City Hall in Downtown Baton Rouge (222 St. Louis Street).

I sent my email to my district rep. I'm sure it'll persuade the council to ignore these senseless regs.

Me too. It's just ridiculous. I hope BRAC is favoring the trucks. I don't even eat at them much, but bad on so many levels to try to limit them if there is no legitimate problem to fix (food safety, etc.).

If ol Smokey had better food he wouldn't even be worried about this. He's been serving over priced beer and food for a long time, and I'm sure he will continue to for a long time, but I don't really even know what he's trying to accomplish here except be a pain in the arse to these guys.

Not sure why its a big deal to either side.
Not worth the time and effort for the council to have a hearing and put a law in the books where current laws are already in place to prevent this.
Also not worth the time and effort for anyone to protest it.

Exactly. Yeah, nothing like limiting competition out of personal self preservation though regulations. That always benefits the consumer.

The overworked police officers wont be enforcing anything more than they are now. Says so in your sentence.

It's a slippery slope to his assumed goal of shutting down or limiting the trucks. Restaurant owner trying to regulate competion. Nothing to see here.

I disagree. Clearly Smokie has an angle here he's working toward, and I do believe it's to open the door to further regulations. Obviously I don't need a metro council ordinance to make it clear that tetu is restricted from parking in front of a fire hydrant. Trespassing is also against the law. We don't need a metro council ordinance telling you that you are personally restricted from trespassing without the permission of the owner. The police will still give you a ticket for doing so with or without an ordinance, because it's already on the books. Smokie may be unashamed enough to use his political office to go after his competition, but he's NO IDIOT. He's working toward a goal here, and this I have to believe is his first step.

Would that be the Smokie that used to own the headshop on Chimes St, the Smokie that tried to run out of business (under the guise of alcohol laws with regards to alcohol licensure/restaurant) Chelseas because Dave had more customers than he did?

If I were a Baton Rouge resident, I would be ashamed to have city council members named 'Smokie' and 'Bones'.
How do people like this get elected at all?
On a side note:
What business(es) does Smokie own, and what were his past shenanigans that are being referred to? I would also like to participate in a boycott of his establishments if he's using his elected position to stifle competition. I'm not in BR a lot, but I'll damn sure be vocal about why I won't go eat somewhere when I am there.
How do people like this get elected at all?

Smokie was actually originally pitched as a reasonable alternative to the Bible Thumping anti-alcohol (and generally, 'anti-fun') contingent that traditionally held sway on the BR City council.
The fact that he's now using his ELECTED POSITION to seemingly blatantly push a very specific agenda against what he sees as competition to his PERSONAL business ventures is pretty unconscionable.
