I have no doubt it'll get done. I just can't till when it's announce so we can put a massive cherry on top of this incredible off-season.

If you have a problem with just rumors, why did you even open this thread?

I opened it for the same reason many others probably did. The title reads Rumor from "friend who works for Saints" re Brees. Considering the rumor is from a friend who works for the Saints organization I'd say that implies in and of itself it is more than just a rumor. That implies insider information and it has to be framed as a rumor due to either incomplete information or condition of anonymity due to job risk. As SaintEB said the guy has also built up some credibility on the board.

I didn't expect to read a regurgitation of the $23mil/year BS that has been stated on 100 different sites as Brees' desired salary. This alone makes the rumor most likely false. Now if it was a 6 year deal giving Brees 19/year along with security for the next 6 years I'd say it was much more likely.

Either way I'm not looking at it as a glass half empty. I have no doubt and never have that Brees will get a deal and be a Saint for the rest of his career. We have many more years to come of Brees and Payton. That has nothing to do with the validity of a rumor. I just expected from the thread title to find something more substantial.

Listen, this friend does not work in the football operations department. He’s in marketing. Someone in his department told him something to the effect of "the word going around the building is that they're preparing to announce a deal with Brees for 5 years $115,000,000."

I've never really gotten any other interesting Saints information from my friend since he's never acted as if he ever had any inside info to share. In fact, he “opined” to me 2 weeks ago he didn't think there was a chance they would look outside the organization for an interim head coach. It was just his opinion. A few days later was when the Parcells story emerged. So who the hell knows.

I have no idea how real this rumored Brees deal is. He heard it as office gossip and then gossiped it to me. Thought it was worth mentioning to you all on a Saints fan message board. Sorry if it offended anyone or if it's just too volatile a subject upon which to report rumors.

Thanks for passing on. I don't think it is a stretch. Now go tell your buddy to ask Loomis how much longer

I need a capologist or someone in accounting to please tell me how they afford this.....I know alot of our FA signings have been "cap friendly", but I'm pretty sure the last time I saw our remaining cap, it was around the 1.25 mil mark, and that was before Hawthorne.

I'm not being pessimistic here, I'm just curious as to how this all works.

Anytime you feel your bud is passing on relevant gossip, I, for one, would love to hear it. Regardless, you have given your source and stated where it originated from. I think you are well within your rights to post such rumors.

Well, if the deal is done, and they are waiting to announce it for PR reasons, then I'd imagine it would come shortly after player suspensions. That'll free up room, and I'm sure we'll cut some players as well. We haven't cut anyone yet.

But who will it be? Smith and Vilma?

We could always ask the Browns for the Asian Sensation back in a trade for those two, straight up.

It depends on how long their suspensions are. There will most definitely be some cuts in the linebacker corp. I would bet they have it figured already. What I'm interested in is what's the plan with Ellis?

I don't believe it for a second. It's highly unlikely, but what if Drew were seriously injured or died in the time between agreeing to the deal and actually signing it? He's not going to risk his wife and ten or whatever kids missing out on tens of millions of dollars for PR purposes.

I assume this is literally completely up to Spags. If he sees some hard work ethic and potential in the kid then he'll stay. He had a good season 2 years ago, contract year, bad scheme, whatever the deal is. If Spags thinks he can do without him, the decision is probaly already made to let him go or trade him.

I agree that the rumor doesn't makes sense for a number of reasons. but its positive info and doesn't deserve crucifiction. I'm not about to get worked up about Clooney sharing this info with the board.

No problem. Not offended at all. I just thought it would have been better to put it in complete context. From the thread title I expected some juicy information. If it was just a rumor from a friend who only works in marketing and hasn't been reliable in the past just point that out.

I think if it is true it likely changed as it got around. A 6 year deal for that amount seems much more likely to me.

Thanks for sharing and hopefully a deal is announced soon. I'm mostly concerned with the appeals and player suspensions at present.

Thanks Sid. What would I do without you bud?

My posts were in fact all different and not repeating nor reemphasizing the same point, but either way.
