Orange Tree question

Getting a late start on tilling the garden, but the ol ball n chain wants it moved to another corner of the yard. Where she wants it, besides IHB, is about 8' from an orange tree. So I went poking around and, just as I suspected, there's a root branching out around 6" beneath the soil.
My question is, if I cut the root about 7.5' from the ball, will it kill tree? I followed it out and if I cut it there I would remove about 9' of root.
The tree has a canopy of about 14' diameter and produces lots of fruit FWIW.

Seems like putting your garden in the shade of a tree would be a bit of a bad idea. Ours was always in full sun.

Naa it gets plenty of sunlight there. The tree is directly South of where it would be. The only time it doesn't get sun is early morning (blocked by fence). By 9 or 10 it would have constant light throughout the day. Just don't wanna kill the tree if I cut that root.

Anything past the drip line of the tree is fair game IMO
