Lets say we don't get Parcells and Carmichael Jr. is the Interim HC and we have a very successful season what do we do with Carmichael? I mean this guy will be in high demand every team will want him. Do we stay with Payton who wants to retire when his contract is up or at least that is what i heard or stay with a younger guy who will be around awhile alot longer?

We know he is a great coach and they are hard to come by but if we have a great season without him what does that say?

Hate to bring up an LSU refrence but so did Saban and Les Miles has done a great job at maintaining it and LSU doesnt have to worry about Miles leaving anytime soon. I cant find the link but I remeber reading somewhere that Payton didnt want to coach until he was old or something like that.

Recruiting for college and drafting and building through free agency are two different things. Just because Carmichael has one good year using the team Payton built doesn't mean he is a great coach.

I know Payton has input but Loomis is who builds the team.

Boise St scenario... peterson was behind that other head coach years ago. Boise st had lots of success... head coach went to colorado, peterson named hc and they had even more success.

Difference being: Peterson was always mastermind of offense there even when he was an assistant.

Payton is our mastermind, not PCJr although he helps. PCJr has rode Payton and Drew's tails of success, not the other way around.

In no way was I saying that PCJr was better than Payton the point I was trying to make if you were fiven the option would you take a chance with Payton leaving in three years or go with somebody like PCJr who would be here awhile.

You keep Payton and Drew together for as long as possible. The End.

Having your assistants being targeted for HC positions is a good thing, and it attracts more talent.

Payton has input? That's a big understatement. Payton comes up with the concept of what he wants and the style of players and team he wants and Loomis has to go find them. Loomis is a wizard and good talent evaluator and does a great job on how he gets guys to come in but I assure you that Payton is the one "choosing the ingredients".

You would have to think of the precedent you're setting. Also what makes you think Pete Carmichael would take the job?

at any level, the head coach is only as good as his support staff.
